Review Scene: A Weekend In The Gardens, feat Missy Higgins, Dustin Tebutt, All Our Exes Live In Texas ~ Royal Botanic Gardens ~ Sunday 19th November 2017

Nothing says Australian summer more than an outdoor concert held at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens with mozzies a flutter, an abundance of food trucks serving up the latest foodie fads and an amazing lineup of homegrown musical talent to make you feel super proud to be Australian.

Melbourne’s newest outdoor concert event A Weekend in the Gardens returned last weekend to mark what felt like the real beginning of summer and to celebrate more Australian (or should I say Melburnian?) music.

Review Scene: A Day on the Green with Stevie Nicks & The Pretenders, Rochford Winery, 18th November 2017

The weather was not looking good as I drove towards Rochford Estate nestled in the heart of the Yarra Valley about an hour’s drive out of Melbourne. Heavy rain continued as I made my way through the soggy throngs of people all decked out in rain ponchos towards the main entrance. Miraculously as Melbourne singer songwriter Ali Barter began her 3rd song, the torrential downpour stopped and the skies cleared much to the delight of the crowd and no doubt the bands.

Review Scene: Kim Salmon & the Scientists, The Barwon Club, Geelong – 30th October 2017

Geelong has an interesting culture when it comes to rock music. Having spent quite a good percentage of my life in and around the Bellarine Peninsula, I discovered pretty early in my live music options that if something was worth seeing it was going to be on at the Barwon Club. There has been a long tradition where touring bands from here and abroad play the big smoke, Melbourne and then add an extra date to span the gap between there and the next major destination. This unassuming little pub opposite Kardinia Park, home of the Geelong Football Club has a back bar and band room that hasn’t changed since the first time I was there in about 1990 and it was the perfect venue to see the reformed Scientists on an otherwise quiet Sunday night.

Review Scene: The Magnetic Fields at the Melbourne Festival – Hamer Hall – Saturday 21st October 2017

We heard how he stayed up late watching tv in ‘Hustle ‘76’ and subsequently ordered the compilation album of the same name (which he informed us actually never arrived!). He started his first band in ‘The Blizzard of ‘78’ and got big laughs from the line “At rehearsal we made The Shaggs sound like Yes”. The audience was clearly on his wavelength. Musically, the live band brought the songs to life flawlessly.

Review Scene: Alison Moyet

Alison Moyet began “The Other Tour” with the poetic April 10th- an apt introduction highlighting her new sound and approach to her career. Flanked on both sides by two keyboard/guitarists her powerhouse voice (foundation of her creativity) commanded its way throughout the whole set.

Review Scene: Peter Hook and the Light – Corner Hotel, 3rd October 2017 by Anna-Maria Megalogenis

It’s rare to see an original founding member of an iconic post punk band performing original songs and a set devoid of any new material without pretence or ego. Such a band member is Peter Hook, the bassist of seminal bands Joy Division and New Order and the love in the room is palpable. “I love you Hooky” screams a fan in the audience, “I love you too…. Bernard” retorts Hook, to chuckles and laughter within the crowd.

Review Scene: Shonen Knife

Music and fashion were the passions at The National Gallery of Victoria last Friday night. The fashion was courtesy of Christian Dior and the music from Japanese power pop trio Shonen Knife. Whilst big in Osaka indie rock circles since forming in 1981, they gained attention on the world scene after releasing albums on K Records and Sub Pop in the USA in the late ’80s. Championed by the likes of Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Redd Kross, they have maintained somewhat of a cult status around the world.

Review Scene: Pop-Up Globe Gala Opening – Thursday 21st September 2017, Shakespeare Gardens, Melbourne

Pop-up Globe comes to life after six astonishing weeks of construction. It will be a spectacle the likes of which Melbourne has not seen before.

Pop-up Globe, the world’s first full-scale temporary working replica of one of the greatest theatres in history, Shakespeare’s theatre, the second Globe, is ready for action … are you?

Among other things, we saw sword-wielding knights in full armour battle it out; fair maidens in beautiful gowns dancing a merry gig and even French counts in their Jacobean finery like its 1614.
