Q&A Scene: Toby Robinson

Tell us about your new single/ album / tour

I’m releasing my debut solo album after years of playing in other people’s bands. It’s really a mix of songs that I have written that are dear to my heart. The album was produced by Nick Huggins and I have been fortunate to have many talented artists to play on the record. I am launching the album on June 5th at The Bella Union (Trades Hall) in Melbourne ahead of a tour to Queensland in early July.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

It’s tricky to say…. it could be both a warm Irish stew on a cold night served with Hot damper.. straight from the fire.

Or a lovely falafel wrap full of yoghurt and salad eaten at a sweet summer music festival.

Which song resonates most strongly and why?

If I had to pick one it would be the opening track ‘At Your Feet’.

‘At Your Feet’ was written when I was going through a rough time. It’s in those times you learn who your real friends are and also when you are most grateful for the simple things in life that are always around us.

Any on the road anecdotes?

Only from Minties wrappers!

Where do you draw inspirations from?

A lot of songwriters ranging from folk musicians like David Francey, John Renbourne and Ry Cooder to people like James Mercer (The Shins) and Robert Smith (The Cure). Music aside I’m really inspired by my connection to nature, people, Australian history and of course the heart.

Whats next for you?

I am gearing up for the album launch in June then off on a small tour. I am already working on songs for another album too!

We’re also waiting to see if our various summer festival applications have been accepted. I hope to take the band on tour regularly next year.

Whats your scene?

Wherever there is music is where I feel most at home.

Toby Robinson is a Melbourne musician and songwriter. A native of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, with a childhood steeped in the music of the finger picking greats of folk, Toby learned guitar at his father’s knee.
