Matthew Hardy is a career comedian. He was the first Australian comic to establish himself on the UK’s super-creative, lucrative London live comedy scene. Hardy has appeared on Spicks & Specks, Good News Week, and is the best-selling author of Saturday Afternoon Fever, published by Random House. He recently wrote/directed/cast the internationally acclaimed touring stage show One Man Breaking Bad. He lives with his fiancée and their daughter in Yarraville, where he runs Yarraville Laughs with James Young.
Now, Hardy moves into the music industry, for a good cause.
Tell us about your new single?
My new (first, ever) single is titled ‘One Minute’s Silence’ and is co-written by Melbourne musician Richard Gillard. We’ve been lucky enough to get no less than Tex Perkins to sing it. It pays respects to those Diggers who lost their lives protecting our freedom. It’s raises funds for Legacy.
One Minute’s Silence (feat. Tex Perkins & Ron Barassi) – single by The Steel Springs out now! Only $2.19 http://apple.co/1BNrole ~ raising funds for Legacy.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
The sound of this song in food form would be GRAVY.
Which song/sketch/joke resonates most strongly and why?
I love ‘You’re Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher’ by EITHER Jackie Wilson or Barnesy. It’s the best message anyone could hear.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from from artistic truth-tellers. Paul Kelly. Laura Marling. Tex Perkins. Louis CK. Richard Pryor. Roseanne Barr.
What’s your scene?
My scene is finding any excuse to dance with my 2 year old daughter Ruby.
And the comedy scene?
As half of www.youngandhardy.com (in tandem with James ‘Cherry Bar’ Young), I run a freshly minted events management outfit who this year for the Melbourne Comedy Festival have brought out Billy Hayes the real-life hash-smuggler who became a best-selling author who’s story became the Academy Award winning ’80’s prison film titled ‘Midnight Express’. It’s not exactly comedy but the man himself tells a spellbinding story and it’s getting 5 star reviews. We’re also producing the return season of ‘One Man Breaking Bad’ (which I wrote), starring US actor Miles Allen, fresh off a sold out UK tour of the show. Both shows are at the Kelvin Club. And locally we’re bringing legendary Australian acts, the Doug Anthony All-Stars and separately, Effie to the Yarraville Club.
