Rob Hirst’s Legacy Honoured at Hamer Hall
Family, friends, fellow musicians and fans gathered at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on 27 October for the launch of World Is Almost at Peace, the final book by Midnight Oil drummer and songwriter Rob Hirst, who died from pancreatic cancer in January 2026.
Hosted by broadcaster Tracee Hutchison, the evening featured heartfelt tributes and performances of Hirst’s songs, including Outbreak of Love, King of the Mountain and The Dead Heart, honouring his extraordinary contribution to Australian music.
Among those attending were Hirst’s wife, Leslie Holland, and daughter Lex Hirst, who played a central role in bringing her father’s final book to publication. Working closely with Rob during his illness, Lex helped preserve his memories, lyrics and reflections on nearly five decades of songwriting.
Also instrumental were the Powderworkers, Midnight Oil’s devoted fan community, and Matthew (Matt) Yau, who helped organise the event. Yau previously rallied fans to raise $90,000 to purchase Hirst’s iconic Ludwig drum kit, ensuring its preservation in the Australian Performing Arts Collection, with proceeds supporting music charities Support Act and MusicNT.
Published by Pantera Press, an imprint of Hardie Grant Publishing, World Is Almost at Peace offers an intimate insight into the songwriting behind Midnight Oil’s enduring catalogue.
More than a book launch, the evening reflected the friendships and connections forged through music. Rob Hirst may be gone, but his words, music and legacy continue to resonate.
