Q&A Scene: Jude Perl

Q&A

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
I’m performing my first full length comedy show in this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival at the Butterfly Club (April 7th – 19th) it’s a mixture of music comedy and stand up. I do also have an album coming out later this year. The comedy festival show is really different to the album (only one song appears in both the album and the show), however the show does give some background information about my experience in LA recording the album

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Crunchy on the outside, caramel-ey on the inside, coconut-ey on the upside, and citrus-ey on the lop-side (SOUNDS DELICIOUS?!)

Which song resonates most strongly and why
One of the songs on my new album is about the character ā€œYettaā€ from the TV show ā€œThe Nannyā€, and Yetta is my hero, and anyone who doesn’t think she’s great I don’t think I can be friends with, or maybe I could, but it will be a shallow friendship of emptiness and lies

Any on the road anecdotes?
I was in New York filming a video and we went to FAO Schwartz (famous toy store from the film ā€œBigā€) and I got a custom made muppet for the video and I think that might have been the greatest day of my life. That wasn’t really an anecdote but I’m gonna go with it anyway…

Where do you draw inspiration from?
I get inspiration from things in life that make me go ā€œum…. did that really just happen?”

What’s next for you?
As I mentioned before I have an album coming out later this year, so more videos and touring when that’s released. I think I will also eat a sandwich soon, because I love sandwiches

What’s your scene?
The Astor Theatre on chapel st. Old cinema with copious amounts of atmosphere playing classic films (Chaplin, Gene Kelly, Kubrick, etc) and me with a honeycomb choc top spilt on my Tshirt because that’s just how I roll.

About Jude Perl

Poster Square - Jude Perl smPop singer, comedian and 2014 Raw Comedy Finalist Jude Perl performs her brand new show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2015 at Melbourne’s cozy and prolific home to cabaret and comedy, The Butterfly Club.

In her debut show at the 2015 Comedy Festival ā€œIs It Just Me?ā€,Ā Perl takes the audience on a magical, sexy-awkward (hyphen intended) journey from her embarrassing childhood to present day Los Angeles as she tries to ā€œmake itā€ in the ā€œbizā€. Coming across all kinds of wackiness, including her own fun-filled anxieties and societal concerns, Perl’s undeniably catchy tunes mixed with her unique brand of humour will charm and inspire in this hilarious and revealing semi-autobiographical tale

Jude Perl has been performing professionally for the past 7 years as a singer and pianist. She spent 2014 in Los Angeles performing solo shows and recording her debut album with grammy award winning producer Brian Paturalski, as well as starring in the critically acclaimed narrative concertĀ Let’s Get It On – The Life & Music Of Marvin GayeĀ at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne. She appeared on Channel 7’s ā€˜The Morning Show’, and was a featured performer in Jason Coleman’s ā€˜Spiegelicious’ at the Spiegel Tent. In 2013 her debut single ā€œGirls & Boysā€ featured regular commercial radio airplay all over Australia (including Fox FM and 2Day FM)

ā€œJude Perl, a tiny package with a big voice and impressive stage presenceā€ – Weekend Note

“Perl manages to draw the complete attention of her audience from her opening phrase. There is a narrative sureness in her voice to match its timbral warmth. Like Ute Lemper, Perl has the kind of instrument that inspires lyricists not to slack off, to invest more in their songsā€ – The Australian

ā€œWhen it comes to crafting the catchiest of pop tunes, this Melbourne musician hits the nail on the head.ā€ – The Ripe

ā€œPerl has been making a name for herself around Melbourne through her remarkable vocal abilities, her original songs and with her own brand of musical comedyā€ – Beat Magazine
