Q&A Scene: Steve Poltz

Q&A

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?

It’s my 14th time down under. That’s too many times. The Australian government told me that I’ve reached my quota. This is the last time they’re allowing me to visit for at least 61 years. I didn’t know there was a limit but I guess there is under article 24B section 7 paragraph 6 in the secure border visitation contract act of 1898 thingymajig. So unless I get reconstructive surgery and change my face like a drug lord I’ll be vanquished from all Australian websites and magazines. It’s really a bummer because I like the coffee in Melbourne.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Frito Pie. A hodgepodge of chili poured on top of an open bag of Fritos corn chips. Sort of trashy and salty and full of vitamins for your soul. Carnival food for curious wayfaring weirdos.

Which song resonates most strongly and why.

Happy birthday. It always makes me cry. I could be in a late night diner or a fancy restaurant or sitting in an airplane. That song always gets me. I think it’s the lyrics- happy birthday to you happy birthday to you happy birthday dear (insert name here) happy birthday to you.
It says it all. Better than Dylan and Cole Porter.
Any on the road anecdotes?

I like to go to strip bars and jump up in stage and dance in my underwear. It’s what I do. I also like to brush my teeth.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Art. I like art. It is fun. I like most everybody’s art except Hitler’s. His colors were clashy. Is clashy a word?

What’s next for you?

Probably a run at President for the 2016 election in America. I’m gonna take care of things. I owe it to the people. If I lose then I’ll probably perform at halftime at the Super Bowl. They keep bugging me and I’m tired of it. I guess it’s my turn but I’d rather be President.

What’s your scene?

My scene is water colors, salt water taffy, ant farms, swiss chard, fun socks, mint tea and planetary time travel. I know several aliens. We’re pen pals.

About Steve Poltz

To suggest that Steve Poltz isn’t normal is about as safe a statement as one could make. You would basically require the powers of the Hubble space telescope to locate Steve Poltz from any region of normalcy. For music fans on both sides of the equator, this is a very good thing.Born among the hearty seafaring folk of Canada’s Halifax, Nova Scotia, Poltz has lived most of his life in Southern California, where the sun treated his rocky Canadian DNA like clothes in a dryer. Naturally a spectrum of cultural and emotional tensions arose and he eventually sought refuge in the art of songwriting, where he tapped into an unforgettable and often horrifying depth of unhinged genius.

Among the music cognoscenti, Steve Poltz is regarded as one of the most talented and prolific songwriters of our time. His songs have been among the longest running ever on the Billboard Top 100 and they regularly appear in movie soundtracks, television shows, and even the odd commercial. His touring schedule is ferocious, ping ponging between continents with enough frequency to earn him manic followings in scores of different accents and languages.

His live shows have captivated audiences far and wide with a mix of singing, storytelling, shredding, and the occasional spoken word rants which have been known to incite riots. He can take an audience from laughter to tears and back again in the space of the same song. Steve Poltz transcends the word “talented.” He is unforgettable in all the right ways.
