Scene Q&A: Ben Provest

Tell us about your new single Trying to be Brave?

Trying to be Brave is a song I wrote and recorded in Iceland last year while I was doing a residency at The Fish Factory. At its heart, the song was inspired by someone I was close to, Amelia. We broke up after living together in Melbourne during COVID, and I wrote this with her in mind. But more broadly, it became about letting go of fear – being brave enough to trust again, to follow your instincts, and to live an authentic life.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time? (your own work)

I’m proud of all the work and projects I’ve been a part of, but right now it would have to be this song!

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

This song would be a hot cup of chai in a huge mug with some banana pancakes. The music is soft, warm and comforting.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

I remember when I was playing a wedding gig and the violinist I was doing the gig with and I were picked up on a boat to go to the island where the ceremony was. The boat driver decided to give us a joy ride, and the $100,000 dollar violin almost went overboard on a turn! The violinist was terrified, but we made it safe and sound. I don’t think the boat driver realised how expensive the cargo on board was!

What, or who, inspires you?

The community of musicians around me and the world inspire me.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

There’s so many! Your Song by Elton John would have to be up there. It’s such a special song, the music and lyrics, it’s an all time favourite!

What’s next for you?

I’m working on an EP of songs that live in the same world as Trying To Be Brave, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work on that around the various other projects I’m a part of!

What’s your scene?

Currently it’s Nashville, TN, but it would have to be Melbourne, and the Australian music scene in my heart of hearts!
