Q&A Scene: The FIX UPS

The Fix Ups: Marlene Samson, Nikos Shannon, Ash Meagher, Huw Gregory

Tell us about your new single?

Our debut album was recorded in 2 days in a farmhouse in Templestowe. It has a mixture of 8 upbeat disco-ish songs, electro rock sounds and ballads. Nikos and Marlene wrote the majority of these songs for a spontaeneous Tour/roadtrip in the US. It is good to finally have them recorded and be happy with what we did!

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

Really loving Conan Mockasin’s work. It is really sexy and authentic, with a great sound.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

After a gig in DC, Marlene was carrying gear back to the car. She was approached by a stranger who asked her if he could join the band, whilst at the same time flashing her with a knife. She dismissed him but he followed her to her car, knife in hand. The police came pretty much straight away. He got in his car and sped off. On the drive back to our airnbnb we were so paranoid we thought every car behind us was the knife guy and that he was following us. Talk about a pushy way to join a band!!

What, or who, inspires you?

Life is pretty inspiring. Friends and their stories. There is a story in everyone and lessons in everything.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

It would be a hot sticky date pudding with loads of ice-cream. Sticky coz the sound will stick to you, it’s got some hot steamy bits, to balance the nice chilled out vibes. The polarity is like a party in your mouth and you get a sugar rush and need to get it all out so you dance naked in your lounge room.

What’s next for you?

We are planning a regional tour for this album, but also itching to get back in the studio. We are the ‘wanna do it all right now!’ band.

What’s your scene?

We live with musos, go to uni learning jazz chords (half of us), and play around with mates from uni. It’s great coz if we ever need someone to play trumpet or harp we can just ask a mate we know.
