Video Scene: Songs about Food and Drink: Red Red Wine UB40

I was a a wee teen when “Red Red Wine” was released in 1983 by UB40. Originally written by Neil Diamond in 1968, such was the catchy nature of UB40’s version that it endured throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s and was regularly played at popular nightclubs and venues of that era. The Metro (Palace) was one that springs to mind. UB40’s mix of reggae, heartbreak and vino, “I was lost, now I’m found” lyrics healed many a broken heart and boosted red wines sales simultaneously. Pour yourself a nice red wine, crank the heater up, lie on the couch and turn the song up. Being pre-menstrual, teary or heartbroken helps.

“Red Red Wine”
(originally by Neil Diamond)

Red, red wine
Goes to my head
Makes me forget that I
Still need her so

Red, red wine
It’s up to you
All I can do, I’ve done
But memories won’t go
No, memories won’t go

I’d have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong
Now I find
Just one thing makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don’t let me be alone
It’s tearin’ apart
My blue, blue heart
