Q&A Scene: Rudi ~ KYLYPSO

Tell us about your new single ‘Deep Blue’ ?
It all started with the colour deep blue representing the “ideal” you hold someone to at the beginning of a relationship. The song sits in a moment where reality is eroding this image, but it is a beautiful thing to fight for. We also wanted to bring in the idea of living in the moment and jumping into things fully, even with risk of being hurt. Musically we approached the song very visually, writing to the theme of both sky & ocean. We all love approaching songs like this as we find it a very inspiring way to work.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
Usually the last song we have written is our favorite. If a new demo manages to make it to the mixing    stage then we know we all really love it. The process tends to be a constant look forward, by the time a song is released we have heard it so many times it’s insane.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
Often when one of us is using our notes on our phone to read the lyrics we have just written whilst recording them one of the other guys goes onto the shared account and changes it to something completely ridiculous. You either end up with a take of absolute nonsense or a take where half way through the top line descends into a hysterical fit of laughter.
What, or who, inspires you?
I think one of the most important things is just relating common interests, when you are writing with someone you can get a massive amount of enthusiasm over something you are into…not necessarily music related, though it often is because as musicians / geeks we are all into various musical aspects. We can’t quite put any songs directly down to talking about compressors and synthesisers, but they all have some of that in there somewhere.
Music wise, we have a KYLYPSO Spotify playlist which we update regularly for all the stuff we are listening to. It really helps knowing where everyone else’s head is at musically & pushes us to keep moving forward. It’d be super easy to write the same song 10 times & just put that out.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
“Everybody Plays The Fool’ by The Main Ingredient.

What’s next for you?
We are collaborating with skateboarders, surfers and skiers to make a music video. We are mega excited to put this together. Otherwise, we have just started playing live with a drummer, which has really been giving the songs another dimension. Previously we were going for a more electronic Ableton type set up – which was fun and close to the recordings, but this has given the set a new peak.

What’s your scene?
Psychedelic indie tennis <3
