Q&A Scene: Rachel Maria Cox

Tell us about your new EP / tour?

My Second EP, I Just Have A Lot Of Feelings, is out on Thursday July 28th through Sad Grrrls Club Records, and I am doing a tour to launch it in July/August. The EP explores a lot of my experiences with mental illness (Borderline Personality Disorder, Social Anxiety and Anorexia/Bulimia). The songs on it are very much me trying to communicate things I can’t otherwise communicate, and musically it sounds similar to artists like Camp Cope, Courtney Barnett and Jen Buxton.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

Mine – Zips, Netflix and Dinner For Six is probably my favourite song off this EP. I recorded the vocals in one take, straight through, and you can hear the point where I have to stop myself from crying. It hits straight to my core.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

It would be a cake full of rainbows and smiles and we could all eat a piece and be happy. Why? Because I don’t even go here, I Just Have A Lot Of Feelings.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

When we were recording this EP, I got three of the best people I know to come in and work with me on it. Oliver Young played drums and recorded, Jack Lundie played rhythm guitar and Brayden Porter played lead guitar. One of the songs is about a really hard time in Jack’s life and so of course recording that was pretty emotional, but Brayden is just this guitar magician and when we were recording these we just sat around and listened to him take that song to the next level. I will never forget just sitting there, holding Jack’s hand, and the way you could just cut the air with a knife. It was so beautiful and fragile, one of those moments that makes you remember why you choose to do music.

What, or who, inspires you?

I am very much inspired by all the strong women and LGBTQIA+ people in my life because of music. Every single day I get to meet and spend time with some of the best people anyone could ever know and that is the best thing about what I do. To name a few, I am inspired by Jen Buxton, Laura Mardon, Erica Freas, Tara-Jayne (of One Brick Today/Canine), Jess Shulman (Eli Cash), Stono River Caves, Allison Gallagher, Zoe Lane (Dog Dirt), Nath and Marnie from HANNAHBAND, June Jones (Two Steps On The Water), Jess Locke, Simona Castricum, David James Young (Nothing Rhymes With David), Chelsea Sanderson (Queer & Now, The Nah), Antonia Susan, Ess-Em, Erin and Emma from Snape (Also Cam and Luke), Maddy Mallis (Jackie Brown Jr.), June Avery (Casa Loma), Courtney Luzmila (La Vif), Nazz Tanter (They.Them.Theirs), Georgina Liversidge (Aitah), Sophia and Amanda (Missing Children/Crafts and Rec), Bec Stevens, Brianna Mahoney (If I Were A Boy), Kira Leikova (Swoon Queen) and so so so many more.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

All of the ones I like. That is a lot of songs.

What’s next for you?

Getting this EP out and then going on tour, and after that I will be playing at Sad Grrrls Fest 2016 in Melbourne on Saturday October 1st at the Reverence Hotel. Sad Grrrls Fest is my baby and I am impossibly excited with the line up this year. You can buy tickets from sadgrrrlsclub.com.
