Q&A Scene: Bella Venutti of IV LEAGUE

Tell us about your new single/tour?

Our new single “Sylvia” was written as an ode to the friendships we have in our teens and how they completely consume you and act as a form of escapism from difficult aspects of growing up. I think it’s a great bittersweet garage pop song to bring summer to a close in Australia.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

We’re incredibly proud of our 2016 single “Bleached” and “Sylvia” alike. They were recorded in the same session and I think they compliment each other really nicely as a first release and follow up. These tracks were the first songs written for a new direction we wanted to take with the band, and we couldn’t be more pleased!

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

We’ve been in the studio recently working on some new material, and when we do vocal tracking the producer has been getting me to do what we’ve been calling a “ham take” for each part of the song, in which I unleash my inner musical theatre child and really ham up the delivery of each line. Funnily enough they end up being the best takes every time!

What, or who, inspires you?

All of the amazing and hard working female musicians and artists in the Australian and global music scene. Slowly but surely, we are gaining more and more recognition and are voices are fighting to be heard. I’m really hopeful and excited about the future for women in rock.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Every time I listen to “Dreaming” by Blondie I can’t help but wish that I could craft something as incredible as that track. “When you met me at the restaurant, you could tell I was no debutant” has to be one of the most iconic opening lines to a song of all time.

What’s next for you?

We’re heading out on tour with the wonderful Ali Barter this April and May as the main support on her “A Suitable Girl” album tour, which is incredibly exciting. Other than that, we plan to keep writing and working extremely hard to put out more music that we’re proud of.

Alt-Pop hunnies IV League’s 2016 dreamy indie anthem ‘BLEACHED’ propelled the fledgling band to the forefront of the Australian music scene, scoring them a host of 4 star reviews from the vanguard and landing them the coveted St Jeromes Laneway Festival Triple J Unearthed slot.

After selling out single launches and supporting a bevy of Australian music lords including Harts, British India, Spiderbait and now Ali Barter on her national A SUITABLE GIRL tour the Melbourne alt-rockers have brought us their first taste of new music for 2017 in the toe tapping single SYLVIA.

The guitar laden indie pop record piloted by lead singer Bella’s killer vocal and impressive false setto is yet another example of why Fasterlouder labelled the band as “Young pioneers in the 90s rock revival“. Produced by Dean Tuza (The Rubens, Slum Sociable) and mastered by Nick Herera of Hiatus Kaiyote fame, SYLVIA proves that IV League really are in a league of their own.
