Q&A Scene: Cherry Rock 016 Special: Dead City Ruins

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
We just finished up recording album number 3. For this record we flew in UK producer James Lewis (arctic monkeys, Adel, Sunset Sons). Coming from mostly a pop production back ground he really added to our sound and the structuring of our songs. We recorded at Studios In The City which is owned by SHIHAD drummer Tom Larkin. It’s our best work to date

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
This question is ridiculous, it’s a rock n roll band not a bloody sammich

Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?
Music is in the eye of the beholder so this question is hard to answer. I suppose our song DIB from our last album rings truest with myself because it’s about the blues.

Tell us a quick, on the road, anecdote.
We got robbed of our passports and money in Rome and had to stay there for 5 days to wait for emergency passports so we could leave the country and continue our tour. We had nowhere to sleep but a guy let us pitch our tent in his field. Turns out his dad used to book LED ZEPPELIN and BOB DYLAN to play Rome. Now this guy inherited the business off his dad and runs a huge venue. We became good mates and he booked us to support MASTODON and every time we go to Rome we stay at his dad’s Castle, literally a frigging castle with a turret!!

That was turning lemons into lemonade!!

Where do you draw inspiration from?
The bulk of our songs are about our lives. Touring, missing loved ones, missing meals and sleep. We draw a lot of inspiration from the music and bands we listen to as well.

Which song do you wish you wrote?
Which ever pop song made the most money. The music I listen to was written and played by the only bands that could have done it justice I would just fuck it up.

What’s next for you?
Back to Europe to tour our arses off as always!

What’s your scene?
Good mates, good tunes and Belgian beers.

About Dead City Ruins

Dead City Ruins have been carving their own path in the world of Hard rock. Starting out in London England and making their way home to Australia whilst playing as many down trodden, hole in the wall pubs and clubs as one band can fit into a seven day week.

Splicing the musicianship of 70’s and 80’s metal and the soul catching riffs of bluesy rock with the intensity and “f*ck ‘em all” attitude of punk rock, Dead City Ruins have left crowds from London (ENG) to Melbourne (AUS) reeling for more and asking themselves where the hell this band came from! 2007 saw the release of the E.P. “Lost in London” and in 2011 their debut album “MIDNIGHT KILLER” to rave reviews online and regular airplay on local radio.

In 2011 Dead City Ruins boarded their majestic vessel “The Blue Bastard” armed with sleeping bags, tents and their gear, and headed out on their first UK & European tour, travelling 28,000kms, playing 50 dates across several countries (England, Wales, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy, Spain), finishing off the tour at an international Metal Music Festival in Dubai.

Ever the road warriors, Dead City Ruins headed back to Europe and the UK to do it all again from June to August 2012, following up on the buzz created from the previous tour.

Rocking festival stages and supporting the likes of Mastodon, Diamond Head, Orange Goblin and Hardcore Superstar, before returning to rock as many venues that will have them in their hometown of Melbourne, Australia. 2013 brought the recording of the highly anticipated second album, working with USA Sound Engineer, James Lugo (Iron Maiden, Bruce Springsteen, Dokken) Followed by a 33 date, 13 country tour of UK, Europe & Scandinavia supporting American heavyweights Skid Row and Ugly Kid Joe to rave reviews!

Record label Metalville (DE) caught Dead City Ruins at a show in Cologne and offered them an international record contract.

The European release will include a bonus track AC/DC cover of “Rock ’n’ Roll Damnation” featuring Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe) on vocals.

Skid Row & Ugly Kid Joe personally invited DCR to support them on their Australian Tour beginning 23rd April 2014.

As of March 2015 Dead City Ruins commence their third headline tour of UK/Europe and are basing themselves out of Europe for the rest of the year.

Dead City Ruins is a working class hard rock band fuelled by what life throws at them … good times, bad times, disappointments, achievements and life in the cruel fuckin’city!

CherryRock016 Tenth Birthday in AC/DC Lane

Cherry is proud to announce that it will be hosting its Tenth Birthday edition of Australia’s only dedicated rock n roll street festival CHERRYROCK016 on Sunday 1 May 2016 in AC/DC Lane and at Cherry Bar.

We are excited to announce our full line-up with the addition of our fourth International act, THE SIGIT from Indonesia! The Sigit (The Super Insurgent Group of Intemperance Talent), inspired by 70s Rock Gods, are a hard rock 4-piece who released their first EP in 2004. However, it was their fourth full-length release, ‘Detourn’ that earned the band the esteemed title from Rolling Stone Asia as “The Number One Act of 2013”.

As they say, never trust clowns…One other addition/change to the CherryRock016 line-up is that Clowns are now going to Belgium and have been replaced by High Tension, the punk rockers on a roll, featuring the enigmatic Karina Utomo on lead vocals.

Also confirmed are esteemed rock n roll Internationals KADAVAR from Berlin, Germany and SUPERSUCKERS from Tuscon, USA who join RICHIE RAMONE the legendary drummer for The Ramones, at the pointy end of our incredible tenth birthday CherryRock016 line-up. Plus, Gay Paris and Polish Club, both from Sydney, alongside the blistering local contingent, which includes Power, Dallas Frasca, Dead City Ruins, Mammoth Mammoth, Mesa Cosa and Devil Electric.

Cherry Owner and Booker James Young adds, “Ten years under our belts and I firmly believe this is our best line-up ever. The Sigit from Indonesia sound like Graveyard from Sweden! Kadavar are my favourite band in the world and AC/DC Lane will grow a beard while these hairy Germans play. Supersuckers were born with a tail and will finally shake that tail in AC/DC Lane. And with locals such as High Tension, Power, Dead City Ruins and Dallas Frasca I know Melbourne’s CherryRock street rock n roll festival shall stand proudly beside the legendary Richie Ramone himself, together, too tough too die!”
