Jimmy Grants (slang for immigrants) souvlaki bars are slowly taking over Melbourne and its suburbs. First it was Fitzroy, then the Emporium, third Ormond and now Richmond, with plans to open in Ascot Vale and Glen Waverley this year. Patrons are looking for quick, easy fare without the fine dining price tag, and Jimmy Grants fits the bill. The menu is simple consisting of various types of souvlaki, side salads, chips and simple desserts, as well as a fully stocked bar with the emphasis on ouzo, Greek beer and wine.
The bench seats in the Ormond store prove popular with diners, along with the fresh, clean, modern fit out, whilst I prefer the smaller and cosier confines of the original in Fitzroy. The Bonegilla $10.50 consisting of a mixture of tender chicken, lamb, chips, onion, parsely and mustard aioli is a delight to eat. The pita is soft, and the condiments compliment the meat. The grain salad $9.50 is out of this world and definitely worth a try. (Recipe here).
Chips with garlic oil, feat and oregano $7 are crisp, salty and moreish. It’s hard not to finish the bowl. Loukomathes greek donuts, with honey, walnuts and cinnamon are the dessert of choice, and all food is washed down with the requisite glass of Plomari ouzo with water on ice.
For quick tasty, wholesome food that won’t break the bank, and when you’re hankering for a souva, give Jimmy Grants in Ormond a go.
