Cafe Restaurant, part of the Doyles Bridge Hotel Complex, offers casual alfresco dining by the scenic Mordialloc canal, where small yachts and fishing boats berth. Palm trees in this beachside suburb give the place a holiday feel, and the food is consistently of good quality. My friend and I have been meeting here for dinner over the last 10 years as it is a midpoint between where we live.
There is a selection of starters, tapas, wood fire pizzas, mains such as old favourite Singapore Noodles, salads and desserts on offer. My companion and I share the Pulled Pork Sliders and Saganaki from the Tapas menu ($11.50 each) and since we both have a tendency to overeat, stop at two of the tapas selections. I choose the Hoisin Duck on Wonton Crisps with Asian Herbs and Burnt Orange sauce $27.90.
The duck is tender and perfectly cooked, with the right amount of hoisin sauce. Wonton crisps add a crunchy texture and the asian herbs offset the richness of the duck. The burnt orange sauce is subtle and not overpowering. Slices of orange are fresh nice touches to complement the duck.
My companion orders Wok fried Singapore noodles w/ chilli marinated chicken , shrimp, sliced pork belly & Asian vegetables $20.9 which is usually a go to choice, when feeling indecisive. This generous portion has the right amount of curry sauce, vegies and meat, and is always comforting no matter what the season.
Cafe Bar has provided consistent affordable, good quality food over the years and is a local favourite. It’s the perfect spot for some summer al fresco dining before a long walk along the Mordialloc pier.
