Food Scene: Tommy Ruff, Fish Bar, Mordialloc.

Fish ‘n chips always seem to go hand in hand with the beach, and Tommy Ruff Fish bar, is smack bang in the middle of the Mordialloc Shopping centre, a short walk from Mordy beach. On this steamy, sultry summer’s eve, both indoor and outdoor seating was full. I chose the “Healthy Fisho” consisting of Grilled Fish with chips and salad for $13.50. Service was brisk and friendly. Meals were ordered at the counter and delivered to the table outside and my companions meal arrived earlier than mine.

The fish itself was tender, its flavour a bit on the bland side, chips were excellent and in copious amounts on the plate, whilst the salad was a little lacklustre, and the piece of lemon accompanying the fish came complete with a black hair on it. When you are paying a premium price for fish n chips, expectations of the meal are higher and on this occasion the meal didn’t provide value for money, or was as good as the hype surrounding this place. The locals obviously disagree, judging by the queue spilling out onto the street, but for upmarket fish n chips in the Bayside area, give The Fish Tank in Brighton a try.
