Scene News: New Zealand Indie Faves, No Cigar, Return for Biggest Australian Tour Yet

Dynamic New Zealand indie rock favourites return for an expansive 13-date run across Australia this September and October

Fresh from another remarkable year of international success, New Zealand indie rock powerhouse No Cigar are returning to Australia with their biggest tour of the country to date, announcing a 13-date run that will see the five-piece perform across Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

The Australian tour forms part of an ambitious 33-show world tour running from September to November 2026 and follows the continued success of the band’s acclaimed third album, Under The Surface. Released last year, the record has already amassed more than eight million streams, helping propel No Cigar beyond 36 million total career streams while attracting more than 500,000 monthly Spotify listeners.

The Auckland outfit has steadily built a devoted international following through a distinctive blend of indie, surf and alternative rock, earning fans throughout Australia, the UK, Europe and North America. Their energetic live performances and narrative-driven songwriting have seen the band evolve from rising local favourites into one of New Zealand’s most exciting musical exports.

This latest Australian visit marks No Cigar’s fourth tour of the country and comes after an impressive run of sold-out international headline shows, including London’s iconic Electric Ballroom, alongside packed performances across Paris, Amsterdam and Manchester. Festival appearances at BIGSOUND, The Great Escape, Supersonic’s Block Party Festival in Paris, Rhythm & Vines and Rhythm & Alps have further cemented the band’s growing international reputation.

Rather than focusing solely on capital cities, No Cigar have once again embraced regional Australia after memorable experiences during previous tours. Inspired by the response they received in towns such as Armidale, the band have expanded their itinerary to include Newcastle, Moonee Beach and Wollongong alongside performances in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle, Canberra, Byron Bay, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

The tour also signals the beginning of a new creative chapter for the band, with audiences set to hear not only fan favourites from Under The Surface but also a glimpse of what’s next.

Their growing reputation has been recognised on both sides of the Tasman. Under The Surface was voted the fourth best international album of the year by Radio Hauraki, while breakthrough single “Concubine” reached No. 3 on the New Zealand Rock Charts and was voted No. 10 in The Rock FM’s annual Top 2000 countdown. The band were also nominated for Best New Artist at the 2023 Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards and previously supported fellow New Zealand favourites Mako Road.

Critical acclaim has followed the band’s rise. Rolling Stone praised No Cigar’s “blend of indie rock and narrative-driven songwriting”, while Scenestr highlighted their sold-out international shows and rapid streaming growth, declaring “the future is sonically bright for No Cigar.” Twice The Hype described the band’s performances as “a journey guaranteed to envelop you in romanticism” through groove-driven rhythms and psychedelic undertones, while 13th Floor praised the group’s powerful live presence and ability to captivate packed audiences.

With international momentum continuing to build and a new era on the horizon, No Cigar’s most expansive Australian tour yet promises to be their biggest and most exciting visit to date.
