Gin and Tonic is my drink of choice and is generally a refreshing summer drink, but can be consumed any time of year. Tonic water once contained a large amount of quinine and was originally used to prevent malaria, but now with much less quinine it’s the perfect accompaniment to gin, providing a distinctive bitter flavour. The addition of fresh cucumber gives it an additional dimension of flavour, and along with the tang of the lime is the perfect drink to wipe away the winter blues.
Ingredients
60 ml of gin (I used Hendrick’s but your favourite gin is fine)
cold tonic water
1 lime sliced into wedges
4 thin strips of cucumber (use a peeler)
ice
(serves 2)
Place ice cubes in the two glasses, and pour the gin over. You can add more or less gin to taste.
Add tonic water and squeeze in fresh lime and add the lime wedge, then fold the ribbons of cucumber and add to the glass.
Top with tonic water if required.
