Vintage Guitar Scene: 1964 Fender Stratocaster Candy Apple Red

Serial number L20641

Back in the late 70s / early 80s I was becoming aware of vintage guitars and their sound. This was the time when second hand (vintage) guitars were starting to appreciate in value.

I had played (and borrowed) early 60s Strats before but never owned one until I bought this guitar in 1983. A wife of a friend had brought this guitar back to Perth, Australia after a holiday in Hawaii. Her instructions from her husband were “bring me back an L series Fender Stratocaster”.

It cost me $100 less than the retail price of a new vintage reissue at the time.

I have it set up with flatwound strings and often use it for recording.

A great sounding instrument that I’ve kept all these years. The neck is dated Feb 64 but the guitar has all 1963 specs.

It can be heard on “Surf’s Up” from The Atlantics “Flight of the Surf Guitar” album and “Hawaiian Moon” from my “Going to Kaleponi” album.
