Dave Gleeson’s scene is Rock N’ Roll. It’s also his footy, his kids and his missus. He states “I guess my scene is to make sure that I enjoy what I’m doing and make sure that other people enjoy it too. Make sure that I’m not a drain on people. “
The Screaming Jets front man is chuffed about the brand new album. “I got a copy the other day, I’ve listened to it a few times. Very excited. It’s the best album we’ve done in a decade, that’s for sure. “ This album was created with legendary producer Steve James. “He worked on our first two albums and our seventh album. Then we did an EP with him in 2000, so he’s kind of been a bit of a constant to our career. We just wanted to do a whole project with him and we’re lucky that we did cause it just sounds awesome. “
[pullquote]I have absolutely no faith in the people that progam radio in this country any more. They’re too scared they’ll get sacked for something[/pullquote] “It’s the first album that we’ve worked on as this unit, so it’s very exciting. And as I said we’ve listend to it now and it’s ticking all the boxes for us personally, we’re very happy with it.”
The album doesn’t yet have a name, “but there’s a couple of songs that we’d love to release as singles. It’s very hard out there when you’re a band that’s been around as long as we have to get a record on the radio – to have stations interested in playing it. They want to play the latest Idol or something like that. So as much as we’d love to release a single, I wouldn’t trust radio programmers as far as I could throw them. “
He continues “it’s certainly sad that all these bands with pedigree and a lot of stations, especially classic rock stations – ones that have built their reputation and built their radio station and their listenership on bands like us and the Angels and ACDC and Cold Chisel. You bring out a single and they won’t even play it. It’s like sometimes you go in and do an interview at the readio about the new record, talk about the new songs, and they’ll say “thanks for coming in, here’s “Better” by the Screaming Jets”. I have absolutely no faith in the people that progam radio in this country any more. They’re too scared they’ll get sacked for something [laughs]”.
And there’s really no TV any more either. “That’s right, just about every time we released a single we’d go on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Rage used to play a lot of good music, but the music there’s programmed by bearded hipsters every week that play the worst music I’ve ever heard.”
The Jets are about to go back on the road with 30 dates around Australia. “Back in the day, we’ve got t-shirts that have got 45 dates in about 2 months, so it looks like a lot of dates. The way we used to tour, we would’ve done 36 dates in 6 weeks. It’s much easier now that it used to be. You leave on a Friday and back on a Sunday rather than being away or 4 or 5 weeks at a stint. It means I can get home and do my parenting duties and kind of live a normal life before I head back out on the road on Friday. It used to be crazy, Monday and Tuesday nights, you’d play up wherever you were and spend a lot of money, so now it’s much more normal. “
[pullquote]No rest for the wicked [/pullquote]Gleeson is also singing with The Angels. Are the Angels going on hiatus while the Jets are on the road? “When I go back to the Jets John & Rick Brewster go back to the Brewster Brothers which consists of all the guys in The Angels except me [laughs]. They’ve got their own stuff going on, so I’m not putting them out of work.”
The Jets lineup has stayed consistent for 7 years now. “My friend Paul (Woseen – bass guitar, backing vocals) has been in since day one. Jimi Hocking – he was our guitarist from 93-97 and he’s back with us now. Scotty Kingman (guitar) has been with us for 7 years and Mikel’s (“The Slayer” Sayers – drums) been with us for 10 years. So we’ve been the same unit for 7 years. It’s proabably the longest that we’ve had a lineup stay together. It’s good and obviously with the time you spend together you get better and better at it. “
He’s looking forward to getting out around Australia. “Especially North Queensland, haven’t been there for about 5 years. Cairns and Townsville and all that stuff. Adelaide and Newcastle are hometown gigs now and the Corner Hotel in Victoria is always a fantastic venue. We’ve been very lucky that some of the great iconic venues of the country still exist and we get to play there. “
There isn’t much downtime after the tour. “I finish with the Jets on the 20th of December and start with the Angels again on the 2nd of January. So I’ve got those 12 or 13 days off, then I go off with the Angels to do the Red Hot Summer tour around Victoria and New South Wales.”
“No rest for the wicked.”
