Review Scene: Zaffre EP – The Clouds

Jodi Phyllis and Patricia Young are back with their trademark dual lead vocals that made us fall in love with The Clouds sound after a 20 year recording haiatus. The 3 track EP titled Zaffre, picks up where they left off, heralding a national tour in April with Blondie and Cyndi Lauper.

With catchy hooks and big wall of sound guitars, it’s the vocals that shine through over the 3 tracks. The lead track Mabel’s Bookshop, with strong, melodic harmonies and a pumping rhythm section propelling them forward, is classic Clouds with an edge.  There are even shades of Thin Lizzy in the lead guitar tracks here in their strong, melodically driven attack. Float on Air follows with more dreamy and atmospheric production and vocals that weave and swirl throughout; the soundscape fitting the imagery of the title effortlessly. Rounding off this 3 tracker is House of the Sun, opening with a cacophony of layered vocals and bold guitar riffs, it bursts through with an energy that naturally features the vocals as the centrepiece. It’s short and sweet with tough and edgy instrumentation that juxtaposes the sweetness of the vocals, a sound that is a trademark of this EP and picks up where the mid ’90s left off. All the elements of the Clouds of old are here but it is a fresh, raw energy that shows they are far from a nostalgia act. Bring on a new album pronto!

The Clouds were among the leading lights of the Australian indie scene in the early to mid-nineties, fronted by the dual vocals of Jodi Phillis and Patricia Young. With three Top 50 Albums – including the classic “Penny Century” (going Gold) – The Clouds were well loved by critics and their huge fan base. They reformed briefly in 2014 to play a national tour.

The Clouds return in 2017 with a new single “Mabel’s Bookshop“ – featuring the first new material in 20 years from a forthcoming EP “Zaffre” out on February 14, 2017 as a digital download.

The Clouds play their first headline show in Sydney for 3 years – it will be a very special night of classic songs plus new material and a few surprises.

The Clouds are also playing nationally on the Day on The Green tour with Blondie and Cyndi Lauper in April.
