Book Review By Christina Heristanidis
100 ICONIC MOMENTS
By Jane Rocca
Illustrations by Juliet Sulejmani
There is a lot to love about this book by Jane Rocca, from it’s easy to understand fashion language to the fabulous illustrations by Juliet Sulejmani. Groundbreaking Fashion: 100 Iconic Moments is jam packed with well researched information.
The book is broken down into five chapters and like fashion it self this could be controversial. FROCK‘N’ ROLL explores the connection fashion has with music, this is an obvious passion for Rocca. She contextualises Kylie Minogue’s gold hotpants as well as Elvis Presley’s jumpsuits, just to mention my favourites. FASHION A-LISTERS includes Kim Kardashian and Marilyn Monroe, by anyone’s definition these women as well as their clothes are fashion icons. HIGH FASHION is my favourite chapter. It is super informative and with examples like The Burberry Trench Coat and Chanel’s Little Black Dress this part of the book brings a great understanding of what makes an iconic moment. HIGH STREET gives the reader a contextual understanding of fashion by exploring popular trends in mainstream retail, looking at a divers range of garments, from denim jeans to the bikini and the kaftan. ADORNMENTS for me has the most wonderful illustrations of shoes, accessories and even fabric prints.
The design and layout of this book is simple, clean and fashionable with both the information and the illustrations shinning through. I particularly liked the illustrations of the platform shoes and the flapper headbands in the adornment chapter, as well as those of Christian Dior’s “The New Look”.
Groundbreaking Fashion: 100 Iconic Moments by Jane Rocca, illustrations by Juliet Sulejmani is a great book for anyone interested in fashion or for anyone interested in design and history. It gives the reader a snapshot of fashion history that goes beyond mere description. This beautiful book puts fashion into context in relation to music, art, politics, history and social changes of the time.
One for the cool kids!

Featuring punk icons, pop stars and fashion trail blazers, Groundbreaking Fashion reveals the most iconic looks and fashion game-changers for the past century
The modern history of fashion has always had significant turning points that altered everything that came afterwards – from the first outing of Chanel’s little black dress and the scandal of the first mini-skirt to Alexander McQueen’s armadillo shoes and Jean Paul Gaultier’s cone bra for Madonna. This book honours and celebrates these groundbreaking fashion moments.
Each of the 100 fashion turning points is illustrated and put into its historical context – how and why it was ahead of the curve. The emphasis is on the designer who created it, the celebrity or personality who wore it and why it was groundbreaking in terms of the social and cultural shift it created.
