Q&A Scene: The Rebelles

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
We’re very excited to be releasing our debut album Go! Rebelle! – 14 brand new songs about cars, boys, and the highs and lows of love and heartbreak. We go from punchy punk rock to big ballads, and a whole bunch of places in between. With a band this big, we knew we needed a big sound to match, so we really went to town and packed it chock full of guitars, drums, keyboards, strings, horns and enough percussion to sink a ship.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Like a sweet slice of honey-drizzled mango on a hot summer’s day. Anyone who’s seen us live will know why.

Which song resonates most strongly and why?
Spanish Fitzroy – a breathless tale of romance and suspense set in the little-known Spanish quarter of Melbourne’s inner North. It’s got everything – twanging surf guitars, rich harmonies, castanets, soaring strings, and a fab trumpet solo by our own Dawn Rebelle (also a member of the equally fab Melbourne Ska Orchestra). Our hearts beat a little bit faster just thinking about it!

Any on the road anecdotes?
We’ll let you imagine what happens when 15 women get in a rock’n’roll frenzy away from home.

Where do you draw inspiration from?
We’ve always loved the classic girlgroup sounds of bands such as The Ronettes and The Shangri Las – we’re suckers for tragic romances, doomed love, and sweet harmony. We also love The Ramones dearly. On the album we tip a wink to a whole range of influences – Nancy Sinatra, The Beatles, Suicide, The Modern Lovers, Chuck Berry and lots more.  But you can be sure that The Rebelles always sound like The Rebelles.

What’s next for you?
We’re super proud of this record and want the whole world to hear it and join in our fun. In the meantime, we’re celebrating the release of Go! Rebelle! at the Thornbury Theatre on Saturday 25 July with Empat Lima and a special performance from magician Dane Certificate, plus your host for the evening ace comedian Andrew McClelland. Then we’d like to conquer the World and be the best backup band Ronnie Spector ever had.

What’s your scene?
Any room that’s full of dancin’ smiles is where we’re at.
