Q&A Scene: The Candy Topps – Femme Fatale

Tell us about your new show?

KITTY – FEMME FATALE is a noir inspired cabaret, which pays homage to the sounds of a time gone-by, using an eclectic catalogue of music from some of today’s most celebrated pop vamps.

STELLA – The Candy Topps were created in 2009, and this is our first full-length show for about five years, so it’s a real passion project for us.

FIFI – The show is full of great music, hot frocks, and hilariously naughty banter – the perfect ingredients for a rollicking night of entertainment!

How would you describe your cabaret show in food form and why?

STELLA – Decadent! Strawberries and chocolate fondue; delicate pastries.

KITTY – A Marie Antoinette feast on crack!

FIFI – Served with a gin and tonic on the side, of course!

Which song resonates most strongly with you and why?

STELLA – Dame Shirley Bassey’s “History Repeating.”

KITTY – As this is a comeback show for us, and it is full of vintage flair.

Any on the road anecdotes?

KITTY – We once sang at a garden party for a surprisingly lively group of politicians, who insisted on feeding us copious amounts of champagne throughout the event. In a haze of champagne induced euphoria, we performed an interesting impromptu interpretation of Happy Birthday for one guest.

FIFI – and we wound up have a tour of parliament in full costume and make up – we certainly turned some heads that day!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

STELLA – The deliciously tight harmonies of The Andrew Sisters,

FIFI – the great comedy and showmanship of Bette Midler, a host of modern day pop vamps.

KITTY – And the style and sensuality of the enigmatic Femme Fatale archetype.

What’s next for you?

FIFI – This is the world premiere of FEMME FATALE so this is just beginning of our journey with this new show.

What’s your scene?

FIFI – The Butterfly Club is our scene – our favourite haunt of all time! It’s unlike anything else in Melbourne.

KITTY – Amazing atmosphere, jam-packed with vintage kitsch and dark cosy corners.

STELLA – Not to mention the delectable cocktails and the hottest cabaret and comedy acts in town!
