Q&A Scene: Superjesus

Q&A with Sarah McLeod

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
The new single, St Peters Lane, was written after hours of observation from my studio window. It’s about transvestite prostitues in Darlinghurst. They work right outside my door, we all learn to co habit together. I’m immune to it now but it was quite eye opening at the start. It’s a single from the forthcoming as yet untitled Superjesus EP. The tour is just 4 dates and we are now half way through, the new songs are going down really well which is such a pleasure to see because fans don’t take too kindly to new music from bands that have had a ten year break, but ours seem to be embracing it. Phew!

Which song resonates most strongly and why?
Gravity always gets the biggest reaction, and Second Sun … everyone sings along to these songs louder than they did back in the day. Funny what a bit of reflection can do.

How do you feel about touring? Any on the road anecdotes?
Touring is fun as it’s actually a break from the hard work that you have to do behind the scenes. Touring is just a few flights, sound checks and hotel rooms… sometimes I look forward to touring so I can get away from my studio!

Where do you draw inspiration from?
These days from life in the city. I live in the heart of the action in Sydney and I love it. I talk to a lot of people and I ask a lot of questions, everyone is so fascinating around here. I could write a selection of short stories about it that all intertwine… yeah that’s a good idea… I might do that next!

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
The Superjesus would be wagu beef with truffle oil mash.
My solo stuff is a buffet.

What’s next for you?
I’m working on a covers record of old blues and gospel songs , it’s called Dirty Dozen and it’s going to be RAD.

What’s your scene?
Anything within a 1 mile radius of my house… I like to bunker in.
