Q&A Scene: Moana Mayatrix ~ MOANA

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?

We’ve just released our debut album ‘In The Allure’. It’s a 9 track exploration of heavy experimental witchy psych trance art-rock, or something like that. It’s full of mystery, mythic creatures, lovers and monsters, pagan poetry, trances and dream-states, the wild feminine and at the same time inner turmoil and frustration during a time of metamorphosis.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

The overall album, for sure, but I’d say right now I’m incredibly proud of the track Blood Moon. It’s been incubating in my life for quite some time and to have it finally expressed is a great feeling.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Hot chocolate with a hint of chilli.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

To get the sound of the E LIX A intro dance beat we recorded the sounds of metal graters, knives and forks and vocals in housing pipe with a shitty microphone. We cut it up and messed with it electronically to get the final sound.

What, or who, inspires you?

People who are living their lives with zero fucks about what anyone else thinks of them. People who live their truth, speak their truth and act accordingly. Also kind people who live from the heart, who let go of the small things and enjoy life with a smile. And people who are on the frontline saving the planet being warriors for the world. There’s a lot to be inspired by.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Stairway To Heaven.

What’s next for you?

Touring the album east in early December!

What’s your scene?

I’d say I revel mostly in a dark, freaky scene somewhere outside in nature at night drenched in style and experimental art and performance with wild, heavy, deep, soulful music with a lot of dancing and self-expression and open-minded, kind-hearted people. But I really love jumping scenes, I can’t stay in one for too long, I need to change it up.

Moana, the creative project of artist Moana Mayatrix, once described by Triple J’Gemma Pike as one of Australia’s fiercest front women will release their debut album In The Allure this Friday, November 8 via Mysteria Maxima Music.

Since the group’s inception in 2013, countless words have been written about the avant garde art rock outfit, all edging around the idea that there is something otherworldly, verging on genuinely dangerous, about this act.

Combining the shamanic stream-of-consciousness poetry of peak- era Patti Smith with psychedelic melodies, heavy guitar licks, and propulsive rhythms, Moana doesn’t so much craft songs as pagan prayers set to the heartbeat of the world.

In The Allure featured FOUR incredible singles all with their own unique and captivating music videos.

Moana transgresses the boundaries of form and genre, incorporating experimental art, theatre, spoken word performance, poetry, costuming, and more in a cross- media syncresis that engages all the senses physical and beyond, in a kind of ecstatic reverie. A singular approach to music and art has gathered to them a fiercely loyal tribe of fans, who have engaged with the project to successfully crowdfund not only their sophomore EP, but part of their upcoming debut album.

A regular and welcome fixture on the local live scene in their native Perth, Australia, Moana have played stellar local festival slots including RTRFM’s In the Pines, State of the Art Festival, Dali Land 2019, Beaufort Street Festival, Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival, Rottofest and have supported the likes of Tim Rogers, Abbe May, and Ocean Alley. Their recorded works have received rave reviews including a slot in “Top 20 Albums of 2014” from X- Press Magazine and their music video The Killer, My Girl was a finalist in “Best Music Video” for the 2014 WAM Awards, while Vader was a Best Music Video finalist at the 2016 WA Screen Awards.
