Tell us about your new tour?
Right now I am experiencing Melbourne, its lovely people, its beautiful and interesting architecture, the glorious food and the magnificent vibe that permeates the city while I try to make them laugh.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
[pullquote]I am the dessert because I am what you get after the main course. I am the glorious finale.[/pullquote] I am on a mission: I want people to laugh at the stereotypes they have in their heads of what ageing is. I absolutely love doing stand up comedy to people from 14-100 and get them to smile at the idea that life diminishes as you age. Doing a gig is never work for me; it is a privilege.
Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
I left the Comedy Theatre last night and a lovely Asian man said, “I don’t want to be patronising but do you know where you are going?” “Of course I do,” I said and promptly took the wrong turn and got hopelessly lost. Which all goes to show that in a strange town at a late hour the sharpest among us aren’t. It also reminded me that I am not as young as I feel.
What, or who, inspires you?
The human condition. People with their amazing diversity making every moment interesting, exciting and new.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
I Will Surivive
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
I am the dessert because I am what you get after the main course. I am the glorious finale.
What’s next for you?
I want to experience more of the world I live in and bring laughter to more and more people who think they are unhappy because no one showed them that they do not need to be.
What’s your scene?
I see, I think, I write and I perform. That’s about it
About Lynn Ruth Miller
British-American born Lynn Ruth Miller is not only currently the oldest performing stand up comedian on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival bill, she is the oldest stand up comedian in the world! She’s super excited to return to Australia after her wildly successful sold out 2015 Melbourne Cabaret Festival debut shows to enchant Melbourne audiences with her 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show This Is Your Future. The show will be performed at Melbourne’s iconic Butterfly Club from 23rd March to 17th April with 20 shows running each Wednesday to Sunday. Tickets via www.thebutterflyclub.com.
Anyone who witnessed her live performance last May instantly fell in love with the 82 year old performer, and she in turn fell in love with Melbourne audiences. Lynn Ruth is a self-confessed late-bloomer to the comedy and cabaret circuit, starting her comedy career when she hit 71 years old. Over the years she has also been an author, professor, newspaper columnist, and TV writer. Fiercely independent and naturally vivacious, she is as infectiously feisty as she is witty. And with show titles like Not Dead Yet, nothing is off the table for discussion.
Born in Toledo Ohio USA, now resident of Brighton England, she has appeared on numerous stages worldwide. She is an author of 15 books, holds two Masters degrees and even managed to make Simon Cowell laugh during her TV appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. With so many feathers to her cap, there’s not a lot she can’t do.
Observing Lynn Ruth Miller’s many YouTube appearances online makes you think that she’d just be nice to be around in that grandmotherly kind of way….except for one thing – she never sugar coats anything, is potty mouthed and has a strong opinion on most issues of life. She’s a bit legendary like that. Imagine Joan Rivers meets Phyllis Diller meets a sage advisory. You will do well in life if you take on her counsel.
This Is Your Future is an exploration of the extraordinary world of Lynn Ruth Miller via stories and is bound to delight you, and hopefully make you reassess life’s goals and inspire you. Her self-deprecating humor, makes for an inclusive audience atmosphere and a night out with her will make you feel like you’ve been given a warm hug but your head will be swarming with a brand new view of life and hopefully some new philosophies as well. In her own words ‘It’s my mission to dilute and obliterate the fear people have of aging…the way you age is a choice’…
“In this show I trace my ridiculous beginning to my outrageous present”. Ms Miller said “Everyone always asks me why on earth did you start stand up comedy at 71 and I say it just happened. I told a joke and suddenly everyone loved me. I couldn’t believe it was so easy to be adored. I didn’t have to make these people dinner. I didn’t have to change the sheets. All I had to do was say something their own grandma would never say…. and tell them truths they would never admit. For example, I always say this is the best year of my life…mainly because I can’t remember the others”. This Is Your Future tells you why someone who should have been content playing bingo decided a life on stage was right for her. “Comedy is just another adventure in a long list of mishaps and unexpected pleasures. It is these very disasters and surprises that I talk about in this show; a combination of jokes and stories that show you how to turn the bad advice you are given, the stupid decisions you shouldn’t have made and the rain that falls on every life into a lot of laughter and even more fun. It all happened to me….and a lot of it will happen to you. Be prepared.”
Catch Lynn Ruth Miller as she returns to Australia for a very special run of her inspiring show This Is Your Future for Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2016 with twenty shows running each Wednesday to Sunday from 7pm on 23rd March to 17th April at The Butterfly Club in the city.
