Q&A Scene: LA Rocksteady

Tell us about your new single?
‘Nothing Without You’ has a few different elements. It was hard to put together because the intro is a bit prog-rock but the baseline is a bit disco. The idea was to put it together so it was simple, powerful yet dancey. I guess it’s supposed to be a little dramatic and cool. It’s almost like a dark 80’s action movie score.

There were a few different lyrical versions Alius and I worked on. [pullquote]It’s very hard with vocals to make them not too serious but not too cliché [/pullquote]It’s very hard with vocals to make them not too serious but not too cliché. I love the way Alius sounds, his vocal tones and high falsetto makes it really cool. I think was one of the first versions of the lyrics we went with.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
‘Nothing Without You’ would be my favourite piece of work at this point in time. I have a few other more arena rock dance songs I’m working on and I guess ‘Nothing Without You’ is a bit of an inspiration to them in delivering a particular feeling. It’s a bit hard because it’s a mix of music genres I guess, not quite rock, not quite pop, not quite dance.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
My studio time is a little bit dry. Mostly consists of red wine, cigarettes and waiting for something to click, but I do find the more I’m out surrounded by music, the more I am inspired to write.

What or who inspires you?
80’s rock / glam rock bands, the whole Justice, Kavinsky, SebastiAn cool French thing and 70’s disco.

Which song do you wish you wrote?
Justice – ‘Civilization’ is one of my favourite songs of all time and I look up to it when I work on music. How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
It’s like a pizza with the right amount of layers and not over cooked? Well I hope…

What’s next for you?
Another single and an E.P this year. I’m also working on a live show and rebuilding tracks specifically for that.

What’s your scene?
Grungy bars and gigs. Really I’m up for anything cool.
