Tell us about your new project?
[pullquote]….it also re-enforced the message of while it’s nice to be important it’s more important to be nice[/pullquote] I have two things right now including a new podcast called ‘Melbourne UNreal’ which is a series of discussions with people from the music / creative industry sharing their journey in their music career and life challenges. It is my hope others will be inspired to continue with their hopes and dreams of pursuing their creative / artistic goals.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
I particularly love public speaking……there’s an energy and connection you create with an audience and you can feel that what you say gets through. It’s always a humbling and beautiful experience when a kid comes up to you and says how much your talk had made them think about where they are and that they will start doing things differently. Ultimately all I want to do is a tip a domino.
Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
I will never forget my first session with Mark Opitz. He’s a living legend in Australian music who’s produced the rekkids that were the soundtrack of my youth and formative years…..I was shit nervous before he came a (AC/DC, The Angels INXS) etc. This is a bloke who has worked with the world’s biggest and best acts (including the A-grade mixing / mastering doods). So after meeting him and he saying how he already knew me and enjoyed my work was a huge moment…….it also re-enforced the message of while it’s nice to be important it’s more important to be nice.
What, or who, inspires you?
Anybody who is authentic and doing work that is for the global good.
How would you describe your work in food form and why?
Home cooking……because it’s real and from the heart
What’s next for you?
Hopefully international travel speaking to young creative and artistic kids and maybe the corporate world……..they haven’t seen anybody like me ;-)
What’s your scene?
I can pretty much fit in anywhere…….but the music scene is my scene.
About Jack the Bear
Owner and founder of Jack the Bear’s Deluxe Mastering. Mastering has taken up the majority of his career since starting work in the music business in 1981. He’s had a stint at recording and mixing, and a concurrent career in radio on Toronto’s CFNY as an announcer, as well as Melbourne’s Triple M, but thankfully found mastering as his calling.
Tony’s been lucky enough to have travelled extensively around the world, meeting and learning from some of the best in the business, and was trained in the art of vinyl mastering by Rick Essig at Frankford Wayne Mastering Labs, NYC. This was the same studio that that produced the likes of Tom Coyne and Herb Powers. Tony (Jack, to most people) started freelance mastering in 1990. In 1999 shop was set up at Melbourne’s Sing Sing Studios, and after establishing himself as one of the country’s most sought after engineers he made the break in early 2006 to build his dream facility.
