Q&A Scene: Jack Earle

Tell us about your new release/tour?

Our debut, self titled album, was released in August of this year. After an extremely successful album launch at The Spotted Mallard, it is already due for it’s second pressing! It features original compositions and arrangements, performed by 18 of the finest musicians in Melbourne.
Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?
Of course, all my songs resonate with me, and have a special place in my heart. However, I think the track on my new album that moves me the most is Ballad, featuring the brilliant saxophonist Rob Simone.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I can draw inspiration from anything and everything. But more often than not songs are inspired by emotions, or experiences. I’m also often inspired by music I’m listening to or learning to play at the time. My favourite artists include jazz musicians (such as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and Brad Mehldau, and of course my idol Harry Connick Jr), and old Soul/RnB artists such as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam and Dave, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
There are so many! If I had to pick one right off the top of my head I’d say the Fred Hersch composition “Down Home”, which I have most recently fallen in love with. So simple, yet endless possibilities!
What’s next for you?
I’m going back to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston for my second semester, in a weeks time; which is rather daunting! But a lot of ongoing projects; most recently a piano trio, focusing more on group improvisation, which is very exciting indeed!
What’s your scene?
Musically; Jazz, Funk, and Soul.
I like good food, good music, and friends! Anywhere that contains those 3 things is my scene.
