Q&A Scene: Hollie Smith

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
I am very close to releasing my first single from my 3rd full Hollie Smith record – Album is coming together nicely ( i think!!) and looking to release early 2016.
Im excited and scared and happy and panicing so just the standard artistic process at this point – looking forward to road testing some new material through November in NZ and Australia and then we should be getting our adult pants on & doing bigger tours next year.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

um – everything i can think of sounds soo very wrong. Indian? comforting, smooth, warm sometimes a bit emotional but with a bit of a kick.

Which song resonates most strongly and why
hard to say at the moment – I’m obviously liking the single ‘Lady Dee’ as that’s got most of the elements down & you can hear it coming together well. But for me personally there’s another track called ‘Dream’ which I wrote for my son & another called ‘Helena’ which I wrote with my terminally ill best friend’s, now husband, for their wedding late last year.

Any on the road anecdotes?
ha. what goes on tour stays on tour.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
for writing, from emotive still minded places and sounds, hence why i find it hard to write more upbeat songs – I dont intend on always having ballads but it always seems to end up that way.
I tried actively writing more ‘up’ songs on this new record but its about half/half.
For my next album i’m thinking a death metal hip hop album lol.

What’s next for you?
Im intending on winning the lottery & getting everything in on deadline for the new album !!! gonna need luck on both accounts…
What’s your scene?
Wine at home on my deck at the end of my day is my happy place.

About Hollie Smith

Hollie Smith is considered an icon in her native country of New Zealand having released albums that have achieved multi-platinum & gold status, and has performed all over the world including at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival in 2014, with one reviewer from the Jazz Times describing her appearance in Montreal as a “…powerhouse performance that captivated thousands”.
