Q&A Scene: Hayden Calnins

Tell us about your new single?

My latest single ‘Warm With You’ is a song about dreaming of an escape with someone, getting away from the city and finding a nice little piece of the planet to call your own. It went through various different versions before it ended up as a folky pop song. It started as a bit of a love ballad on the piano, and slowly crept its way to becoming something a bit more fun. There’s also a b-side release with the single called ‘Made Of Everything’ which is an instrumental piece I wrote.

Both these tracks are part of my upcoming EP ‘A Life You Would Choose’ which is coming out in September. The EP explores the ideas of leaving what your familiar with and starting something new.
I’ll have some shows coming up later this year for the EP, which haven’t been announced yet but stay tuned for details!

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

Of my solo work it’s probably my ‘Dirt’ EP. It’s been the only body of work I’ve done that actually felt finished when it was time to release it. I tend to struggle knowing when enough is enough but that EP definitely felt done which was a rare thing for me.

From my band ‘Ok Moon’, my favourite track is yet to come out, but it’s called ‘Stones’ and will be out in a couple of weeks alongside our debut album. VERY excited about that release.

Tell us a quick on the road or studio anecdote.

There’s just too many to share but the first one that popped into my head was while I was producing and recording the upcoming ‘Didirri’ Album, it was the middle of summer and there was a bushfire that started about 2 km from my house. We had to evacuate my house, leave everything there and hope for the best. Luckily, the fire got controlled pretty quickly and we didn’t lose any of our equipment or the album but it definitely made us appreciate the album a lot more and the work that we’d been putting into it. That old saying ‘you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s incinerated in a fire’ kinda thing…

What, or who, inspires you?

Life in general is the biggest inspiration. I write about real things rather than made up stories.

Musically, I’m inspired by all genres but some of my favourite artists are M83, Leif Vollebekk, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, and Nils Frahm. They are my go to.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

Vancouver Time – Leif Vollebekk

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Parfait – for its many layers.

What’s next for you?

I’ve started writing the next album, hopefully it’ll be a full length LP. I’ve been exploring baritone instruments and rediscovering electric guitar lately, so hopefully it’ll be another weird one.

What’s your scene?

Beach rat, coastal kid who spent way too long living in the city. Is that a scene?

About Hayden Calnins

Hayden Calnin is back again stronger than ever with one purpose and one purpose only. To create music so warm and beautiful that you can’t help but imagine what it would be like if you quite your job, say fuck you to the world and ran into his arms, leaving all your problems behind. Warm With You is an invitation to do just that. He has nailed the vocals and harmonies and the simplistic yet high in the mix guitar and drums leave you daydreaming long after the song is finished. As the song reaches its second half it lifts in a way of pure euphoria creating tingles down the spines of listeners.

To top it off he has done what only Hayden can do and created a side that builds on the aesthetic created in Warm with you.
