Gig Scene: Leaps And Bounds Festival – Underground Lovers, Autohaze, Glory Box – The Tote, July 19th 2015

The third annual Leaps and Bounds Festival showcased, as it always does, local talent from in and around the City of Yarra. Over 50 awesome venues and so many shows presented that there was something arty for every punter to enjoy.

While the big festivals flounder, it seems that shows in the burbs and in quirky locations are growing in popularity because there are so many facets to like about these more intimate shows.

The final day of the festival saw many of us take a walk down memory lane as three iconic bands returned to where it all began. The Tote opened its doors to young and old alike and despite the age range we were all present hear music that really encompassed the best of the 90’s sound.

Beginning with Glory box – a Melbourne band that formed in 1988, our ears were assailed with a hit of indie, which held joy and energy and transcended time. This band reforms occasionally for gigs, and seemingly has held on to many fans even though performances are, these days, intermittent.

Autohaze received a massive reception and played a fine gig. Another indie rock band, songs such as ‘White Bird’ and ‘Put It Together’ brought back memories of late and drunken nights twenty years ago, when we rocked out to the best music the world has produced.

The Underground Lovers left the music scene for a little while, but have well and truly picked-up where they left off, and are as entertaining as ever. A sweet interlude when there was pause for a poor misguided soul to propose to his girlfriend of four years, then it was back into music that manages to stir feet into life. Finally there were a few dancers on the floor but before we knew it, the nostalgia was over and it was time to head home with the hope that these bands may find another occasion to play some pretty fine music all on the same bill.
