Food Scene : Island Vintage Shave Ice, Waikiki, Honolulu, Oahu

IMG_2515

Honolulu, a tropical paradise, where the weather is beautiful, the shopping unfathomable, the footpaths teeming with tourists and the shaved ice a welcome cool treat when craving something sweet. On Kalakaua Ave, outside the Kate Spade Store and the Royal Hawaiian Center, is Island Vintage Shave Ice,  a kiosk serving shaved ice with natural flavouring. Having seen the gigantic adult servings, I opted for the keiki (kid’s size) and even that was huge. Anyone who has travelled to Hawaii knows there isn’t a small serving size on the island. I opted for the strawberry, lychee and mint topping, with fresh slices of strawberry on top and a frozen yoghurt centre for $5.25 USD. Soft serve ice cream is also available, and is recommended as it will enhance your shaved ice experience. The topping is sweet and completely natural, and the yoghurt centre is refreshing. It’s a welcome change to the artificially flavoured and coloured shave ice you find around town.
