Review Scene: Thrones! The Musical Parody, St Kilda’s Alex Theatre, 14th June 2025 by Karen Dean

Nothing could stop these die-hard Game of Thrones fans from braving a winter’s night in Melbourne to enjoy an evening of comedic mayhem — and we laughed our way through every outrageous, chaotic second of Thrones! The Musical Parody.

In the royal capital of Westeros, we witness Jon Snow battling White Walkers, a crazy bloody Red Wedding re-enactment, and all the inappropriate drama between Cersei (Belinda Jenkin) and Jaime (Asher Griffith-Jones). Griffith-Jones also doubles as Tyrion Lannister — the sharp-tongued comic dwarf who tries desperately to be taken seriously, delivering one of the night’s funniest performances.

This was no slick, big-budget affair — and that’s half the fun. From bad wigs and flimsy backdrops to toy swords and costumes made from bed sheets, the whole show embraces its makeshift, low-budget style. Everything is adapted for maximum comedic effect, and the audience couldn’t get enough.

One of the most beloved characters, Daenerys Targaryen (Kelsey Halge), also known as the Mother of Dragons, struts the stage and sings the standout number “Mother of Dragons.” Surrounded by umbrellas representing dragons, the scene pokes fun at her over-the-top obsession with destiny. It’s ridiculous, theatrical, and brilliant.

Conor Putland nails the role of Jon Snow with the perfect blend of seriousness and parody. He channels the moody hero while sending him up, drawing big laughs with his deadpan delivery and intense, over-the-top sulking.  For me, his high-energy performance was a stand-out highlight of the show.

A crowd favourite is the Red Wedding Reenactment. The song “Stabbin’” transforms the series’ bloodiest massacre into a chaotic musical highlight— complete with upbeat melodies, witty lyrics, and crazy, fast-paced costume changes. It’s fast, funny, and filled with clever low-budget stagecraft.

If you’re looking for a wild night out and a hilarious celebration of the show you love (or love to hate), don’t miss this. Thrones! is a must-see — a riotous, irreverent parody brought to life by a young and hugely talented cast who absolutely deserve your support.
