Q&A Scene: SKYCHA

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?

My debut album ‘Owe Someone’ is a multi-layered compilation of soulful lush vocal arrangements set against a backdrop of dark vintage synths, glitchy grooves, jazz harmony and flickering electronics.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Like a great burger. It’s rich, dense and juicy at its core with a lot of texture and crunch in the many layers at you bite your way through.

Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?

I wrote my song ‘Bullet’ during a difficult time in my life when loved ones were dealing with illness. The lyrics are very dark and emotive and I found it was a great way to channel my emotions at the time.

Tell us a quick, on the road, anecdote.

My guitarist Kumar and I toured around Australia with a band when we were 18 staying in the most hideous backpackers accommodation. We managed to all acquire an identical red itchy rash which I naturally assumed to be a rare Bolivian infectious disease. Fortunately it was only bed bugs but it was still so nasty!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from all the obvious places like my relationships, experiences and the music that I love to listen to. Also travel is a great inspiration for me. I wrote a lot of music after I returned from Nepal and spent time in Banff, Canada.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

A Case of You by Joni Mitchell. What a sublime storyteller.

What’s next for you?

After my Melbourne album launch I’m excited to be heading to Japan for a tour and then to Europe for a couple months. I hope to start writing for a new album while I’m away.

What’s your scene?

The Melbourne music scene is incredible and stretches far across the city. There’s always an exciting and inspiring live gig happening every night of the week.
