Review Scene: Eilen Jewell – Caravan Club, May 17th 2018

It’s a long flight from Boise Idaho to Melbourne but American singer songwriter Eilen Jewell has made the journey twice in 6 months having found her people here, as evidenced in her latest run of sold out shows around the country in support of her latest album ‘Down Hearted Blues’. The album is a wonderful celebration of her favourite blues songs that she discovered in a hidden corner of the attic in her family home as a teenager in the form her father’s record collection. The way she told the story to the packed house at the recently re-located Caravan Club, it was a discovery that was unexpected; like uncovering secret treasure, confessing that if the records had been foisted upon her at that impressionable age she probably would have run a mile from them and missed out on the joys of artists such as Howlin’ Wolf and Bessie Smith until way later in life.

Snap Scene: Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience , The Palais – Thursday 24th May 2018

The Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience (JBLZE) carries the bloodline of legendary drummer John Henry ‘Bonzo’ Bonham, an icon who passed away at just 32 years old. Son Jason was then 14.

Now 51, with a stellar career under his belt, Bonham junior’s critically acclaimed show seems a far cry from the first time he performed. At the tender age of four, Jason was seen deftly twirling drumsticks behind a mini Ludwig drumkit, in a home-movie segment of Led Zeppelin’s benchmark concert film, The Song Remains the Same.

Remembering Ros O’Gorman 1960 – 2018

It was always a good gig with Ros in the pit. A beautiful person. She loved music, family, friends and a good Chardonnay.

Quite frankly, What’s My Scene would not exist without Ros. Her mentorship and tireless enthusiasm kept us going.

A great friend. An excellent photographer. We’ll miss you Ros.

Recipe Scene: Healthy Lemon Pie Bites

This recipe is lifted from Lola Berry’s The 20/20 Diet Cookbook. Although I’d love to eat cake and biscuits all the time I acknowledge that at times a healthy treat is required. These little bites really fit the bill. They are pretty quick to make and are really nice. I make a batch and put half in the freezer at work for when the shortbread creams are calling me but I feel I should resist. Don’t be tempted to leave the mint out, it adds a really great dimension. My only adjustment is that the recipe calls for the juice of 3 lemons, but I just add one – you still get the lemon taste but the mixture is a little firmer and eaiser to work with.

Snap Scene: LA Guns – Max Watts, Melbourne 18th May 2018

L.A. GUNS was formed in 1982 by guitar player Tracii Guns and, then unknown singer, Axl Rose on lead vocals.

The “classic lineup” of Guns, former Girl singer Phil Lewis, drummer Steve Riley, guitar player Mick Cripps and bassist Kelly Nickels have sold 6.5 million records, including 1988’s L.A. Guns and 1990’s Cocked and Loaded, both of which were certified Gold. Cocked and Loaded contained the hit single “Ballad of Jayne” that went to #33 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #25 on the Mainstream Rock charts.

After a nearly 15-year break, Philip Lewis and Tracii Guns are back together for another chapter in their partnership that began in 1986, 4 years after Tracii formed L.A. GUNS in 1982.

Snap Scene: Steel Panther – The Forum, Melbourne, 16th May 2018

Steel Panther was formed in 2000 and is Michael Starr (lead singer), Satchel (guitarist), Lexxi Foxx (bass) and Stix Zadinia (drums). The fearsome foursome are not stopping anytime soon. “Our drive to bring heavy metal back has not lessened,” concludes Michael Starr. “It’s actually gotten stronger. We’re not going to stop. I look forward to our continued world domination.”

Last in Australia for Soundwave 2015, the band played main stages at the festival and drew massive numbers to their bombastic set, simultaneously offending and salaciously delighting all in attendance. In recent times, they have almost entirely sold out their UK tour, which included Wembley Stadium and played main stage at Download Festival.
