Tell us about your new single ‘Everything You Want’?
It’s a song about not knowing how good we have it, finding ways to complicate and complain no matter the weather. Originally I thought I was writing about someone else, but slowly I realised I was just being critical of myself.
I’m really amazed at how this one came out, it was much different entering the studio compared to when we left thanks to the collaborative efforts of my mates Kieran Logan and Graham McCusker. Helps me enjoy it more when it feels like I’m listening to my friends music rather than my own!
What’s your favourite work at this point in time? (your own work)
I think my favourite of my own tune at the moment is ‘Raining Monarchs’, the first track on my album. It came together pretty easily and organically, which is always a nice surprise. I did however realise later that I had totally ripped off my friend Estelle Conley’s song – but she loves the song so was very gracious about it.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
There was a sweet (or lolly as you’d call them here) called Irn Bru Bars in Scotland growing up. I’d say one of them. So good, but so bad for you.
Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
At the studio I recorded the album in (Tpot Studios near Perth in Scotland), Robin who runs the place has befriended a jackdaw who just flys in and out of the studio as she wishes. When I was recording the acoustic guitar for ‘Settlers’ I had to stop a few times – the guys were trying to cook in the kitchen (there was a window from the live room into the kitchen so I could see) and Jackie kept swooping in and pecking their heads. Not only was their squealing ruining the takes, but it was just so funny to watch behind some nice safe glass.
What, or who, inspires you?
Mostly the musicians I work with more than anything. I’m always stealing their ideas or asking them to help me with something I’m working on. Their successes spur me on to take myself in different directions. It’s nice – I’m lucky.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
I’d love to have written something that makes money! Do they still get royalties from Happy Birthday? Something like that… So household people wouldn’t even know it was me.
What’s next for you?
Well my album ‘Outer Monologue’ is released on Oct 17. After that I’ll be releasing one more album single, plus a Xmas single and preparing for the album launch show at Shotkickers, Thornbury on 19 December.
What’s your scene?
Great scene of songwriters and indie rockers in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Not all of them in their youth either – I fit right in!
‘Outer Monologue’ is out Thursday Oct 17
