Q&A Scene: Chuck Sics

Tell us about your new single ‘Redo’?

“Redo” was one of the first songs I wrote as Chuck Sics, a few years ago now. I’d just gotten over my obsession with guitar and moved onto synths – as most gearheads do. It’s about reconciling with your faults, like in a breakup or an argument, and learning to accept your part in it.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time? (your own work)

A track called “Alone On A Plane”. You’ll be able to listen to that one soon. It actually is one of the few that came from a dream I had that was very existential and pretty scary, but I tried to find the beauty in that feeling and put it to music.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Like a deep-fried slice of pepperoni pizza. There’s depth there, plenty of crunch, and it’s like, you didn’t really need to deep fry it, ya know? But it’s an interesting choice at least.

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

I got to play bass in a band in the main room at studio 301 once, that was pretty cool. Also I have a candle warmer lamp in my home studio which I use to keep my coffees warm, anecdotally.

What, or who, inspires you?

I’d say this record is most inspired by Lonerism-era Tame Impala and OK Computer-era Radiohead, but I also adore The Pixies, and The Strokes – that kind of rock music really resonated with me at the time.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

“A Day In The Life” by The Beatles.

What’s next for you?

Well there’s an EP on the way, and I’ll be playing a show with my band on July 11th at the Trocadero Room – come hang.

What’s your scene?

I have a wonderful group of friends who play and make music all the time, and I love being around them at shows or wherever. I admire so many people making music in Sydney, regardless of genre. One place you can catch us regularly is the Inner-West Hop jam at the Trocadero Room late on Friday nights.
