Tell us about your new single ‘Arms’ – How long was the journey from the moment the original idea came to you to the day you finally released it, and did it change much along the way?
I wrote ‘Arms’ right around the time I met my girlfriend Tilly. I’d had the chords and I remember feeling pretty down on it as I was writing it – I thought it was too sweet, too obvious, cliche etc. Then I met Tilly, and I fell in love, and then the song suddenly made sense to me. All my cynicism and pessimism about it faded away and I saw what it was supposed to be, so I made it for her. When it came time to release it, I really wanted to lean into that. It wasn’t about trying to sound cool, it was just about love.
What is your favourite album of all time and why?
Lonerism by Tame Impala. Right music, right time. Perfect album. Catapulted me into the future.
Have you had any mishaps while playing live? Tell us about your most memorable mistake
We had a fire alarm go off during one of our gigs last year at SXSW Sydney – we played like three songs at our first showcase and then it went off, we got pulled off stage and sent outside. We were still holding our guitars out on the street and we jammed with one of the security guards. It was a false alarm so we got to go back inside and do one more song before our slot was over, so it was actually pretty good.
Who is the biggest influence in your life?
My friends, my family, and my partner.
If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, alive or dead, who would it be?
My band.
What’s next for you?
More gigs and more singles and hopefully an album soon. We shall see.
What’s your scene?
My scene is a collection of really amazing artists in Sydney. I’m fairly regularly amazed by the people I’m literally just hanging out with, it’s crazy. Fully formed, forward thinking artists.
