Review Scene: Upside Down Fantasyland, Written and Performed By Troy Rogers, Melbourne Fringe Festival, Speakeasy Theatre, 13th October 2025 by Karen Dean

Imagine a small, intimate room filled with people. Into this space walks a man—poised, graceful, impeccably dressed, speaking with quiet dignity. Few could have anticipated that we were about to hear a story marked by drug and alcohol addiction, physical and psychological abuse, and neglect.

Before us unfolded the story of a broken child—one who, in his search for love and acceptance from parents unable to provide it, began his own descent into addiction and lawlessness. Yet what emerged from that pain was a story of redemption, empathy, and forgiveness.

Troy’s journey was told with raw honesty, moments of gentlehumour, and profound emotion—woven through prose, poetry, and song. It was a powerful reminder of how one compassionate role model, offering unconditional love and belief, can transform a life, even under the most extreme adversity.

For me, this was a man’s story of survival—of transcending trauma through the healing power of unconditional love. My takeaway message is clear: recovery from adversity begins with forgiveness and the courage to love again. Upside Down Fantasyland is not just a performance—it is an experience that speaks directly to the heart and soul of every person privileged to witness it.
