Review Scene: The Cult, Enmore Theatre, 2nd Dec 2024 by Martin Cilia

It’s a Monday night at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney and a capacity crowd of mostly black T-shirt clad people are gathered here to see ledgendary band The Cult in concert.

First up is support band Mayatrix who hail from Western Australia. They’re a modern rock groove based band made up of vocal, guitar, bass, drums and various effects. Girl singer Moana has a striking stage presence and kept the crowd engaged throughout their performance.

The Vocal was a bit ess’y at times and sounded stronger in the middle register but apart from those small things it was a great delivery. They have a bright future if they can stick together and keep on doing what they do. To get to the next level they would need a ‘hit’ song to propel them along.

The Cult have a die hard following who are also a big drinking crowd judging by the bar que and the amount of drinks being carried through the audience.

Live they sounded more modern than their earlier recording would have suggested with the guitar having more ‘dirt’ live than on the recordings. Although there maybe one too many ‘pick scrapes’.

They had the Classic English band stage set up with bass to the left and guitar to the right following in the tradition of Led Zeppelin, Free, Deep Purple.

The Cult originally featured vocalist Ian Astbury, guitarist Billy Duffy, bassist Jamie Stewart and drummer Ray “Mondo” Taylor-Smith.

The group’s current lineup includes Astbury and Duffy, alongside drummer John Tempesta (since 2006), bassist Charlie Jones (since 2020), and keyboardist Mike Mangan (since 2022).
