Throughout the evening, it felt as if time had slipped backwards to the 70s and 80s of disco and pop magic, when the Bee Gees’ music ruled dance floors and airwaves. The tribute provided a dazzling sense of déjà vu, with The Best of the Bee Gees delivering all the favourite hits with panache, combining musical excellence and style.
The performance was faultless with harmonies that captured the very essence of the Gibb brothers. Credit goes to all members on stage: Evan Webster as Barry Gibb; Russell Davey, Musical Director, as Robin Gibb; Greg Wain, as Maurice Gibb; Ralph Muller on guitar; Greg Loxton on drums and Brad Poole on bass.
Some of the highlights of the first act drew from the Bee Gees’ 60s and 70s catalogue, including “Spicks and Specks,” “To Love Somebody,” “Lonely Days,” “Emotion,” and “Islands in the Stream.” One of my personal favourites, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” became the band’s first U.S. No. 1 hit. Another standout was “Massachusetts” – their gentle ballad and first U.K. No. 1.
Act Two featured numbers from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, including “Stayin’ Alive”, “Night Fever”, “How Deep Is Your Love”, “More Than a Woman”, “Jive Talkin’”, “You Should Be Dancing”. The highlight of this act was Evan Webster’s rich falsetto, which echoed across these disco classics. Credit also goes to Russell Davey, who expertly reproduced Robin Gibb’s unique vocal tones.
Recognition must also go to Greg Wain, as Maurice Gibb who brought warm vocals, strong stage presence, and outstanding musicianship. Ralph Muller impressed with his precise guitar tone, Greg Loxton powered the set with his skillful drumming, and Brad Poole provided strength in the rhythm section.
Finally, the evening was completed by the show’s featured vocalists, Roslyn Loxton and Debora McLane, whose performances added depth and quality to the program. Complementing them was the powerhouse soul ensemble, Sex and Chocolate. While not disco legends in the traditional sense, their Motown-inspired energy and polished delivery lifted the show to another level.
