What a treat it was to see one of my all-time favourite films brought to the stage as a musical for the first time in Melbourne.
There’s always a sense of apprehension when a much-loved film is adapted for the theatre, especially one as iconic and romantic as Pretty Woman. The storyline is simple but timeless: a privileged businessman meets a young woman working the streets, an unlikely partnership develops, they fall in love, and, in true fairy-tale fashion, live happily ever after. We may live in an age dominated by technology, but audiences still embrace a classic Cinderella story. It’s a story about hope, believing in yourself and daring to dream, reminding us that sometimes the impossible really can happen.

For me, one of the strongest messages of the musical is Vivian’s personal journey. Beyond the romance, it is a story about self-respect, confidence, and taking control of your own future. As Vivian declares, “We say who. We say when. We say how much.” It’s a powerful reminder that we define our own worth rather than allowing others to do it for us.
This production is a faithful adaptation of the original film, capturing its warmth, humour and romance while adding the energy and spectacle of live musical theatre.

Samantha Jade shines as Vivian Ward, bringing warmth, charm and vulnerability to the role. Her performances of “Anywhere But Here” and “I Could Get Used to This” were among the musical highlights, showcasing both her vocal ability and engaging stage presence. Ben Hall is equally impressive as Edward Lewis, delivering strong performances of “Something About Her” and “Freedom,” while the chemistry between the two leads carries the production beautifully.

Michelle Brasier provides plenty of humour and another strong performance as Kit De Luca, with “Together Forever” proving another standout moment. Tim Omaji brings charisma and versatility to the role of the Happy Man, seamlessly guiding the audience through the story, while My Thompson also delivers a strong supporting performance. The finale, “Oh, Pretty Woman,” is the perfect way to end the evening, sending the audience home with a smile.

The musical closes with one of the film’s most memorable exchanges. Standing on the balcony, Edward asks Vivian what happens after the prince rescues her. Vivian replies, “She rescues him right back.” It perfectly captures the heart of the story. This isn’t simply about a prince saving a princess; it’s about two people changing each other’s lives.
There’s nothing quite like a great love story, and Pretty Woman: The Musical delivers one with warmth, humour, memorable songs and plenty of heart.
Call me a romantic, but perhaps love stories never go out of style.
