Upon arriving in Newtown on a Saturday evening I first noticed how much it’s changed in the past few years and then began to notice that the general age group of the out and about locals [pullquote]This band is heading to the next level – I’d suggest seeing them while you can in these more intimate venues.[/pullquote] was around 17 to their mid 20s. These would mainly be the sons and daughters of the yuppies that moved into the area 20 / 25 years ago when the Sandringham Hotel was a popular band venue.
The Newtown Social Club, formally known as The Sandringham Hotel, has two levels with the band room upstairs.
When we arrived the support act was on, Jep and Dep, a guy on acoustic guitar and vocals and a gal on vocals. What struck me about them was how quiet they could get and still hold the audience, they drew them in rather than pushing them away.

They started slow and seductive and worked the dynamics of the band exceptionally well with the audience hanging off every word. Their song arrangements were excellent, really well thought out, and each instrument’s part was well
crafted and executed.
This band is heading to the next level – I’d suggest seeing them while you can in these more intimate venues. I can see them doing Australia proud gracing the stages of the European festival circuit.
