Q&A Scene: The Witchy Djypsies

Tell us about your new single In My Mind?

In my mind is like riding a galloping horse in western like never ending land of thoughts bursting out of an overstimulated mind. I really wanted us to write a song about overthinking and feeling all the feels all at once. I had the idea on a sleepless night, crushed under the noise of my existential questions and random memories sprinkled with anxiety. I brought a few words and a melody to the talented legends in my band and we shaped it all together into this eccentric sonic journey layered with punchy brass lines, wicked harmonies, little bits of blues and mad guitar riffs!

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

I’d say this track! I’m really excited about it, we’ve worked hard and took our time to get it where it’s at. For our two last single releases, we have really moved into an era of intricate and well crafted songs that make people move and feel things while keeping a fat sound pumping (hopefully haha). I love seeing our evolution since we started barefoot in a shed down in Witchliffe.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?

Probably a banquet? There’s something for everyone, it’s a little messy but really exciting and it’s generous!

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

A few years back during our peak busking vagabond era, we decided to try to get in one of the big folk festivals here and make a name for ourselves. Money was too tight to buy tickets for the 7 of us but we were too keen to show them what we could do. Our spy on this inside told us the artist’s bracelet colours. Quick detour by Officeworks and here we are colouring blue paper bracelets with a black sharpie on our way down to the gates… A mix of right timing and wit and we somehow all made it inside with our cars! We plugged our small speakers into a donut van and busked whenever there was nothing going on, under the curious eye of some people from the organisation… We applied to play there a year later and we managed to be on stage! Looking back on this, I’m not necessarily proud to have snuck in this particular festival because supporting local events is important but it just shows you that we were pretty determined and full of ressources despite being pretty broke hahaha

What, or who, inspires you?

Making people dance! This is the mission! There’s no better feeling to be surrounded by your mates doing what you love and actually being able to transmit the joy to an audience! Personally I’m inspired by the rest of the band. These mens are an absolute random selection of stupidly talented and passionate weirdos ready to drive so far and camp on the side of the roads like feral cats just to play our songs to as many people as we can. The dedication everybody is showing into making that project possible and the energy everyone is sharing on stage is really inspiring!

Which song do you wish you wrote?

 Bohemian Rhapsody.

What’s next for you?

After our sold out launch at Mojo’s in Fremantle we are absolutely pumped! We are going to keep spreading the word about our new song child In my Mind and try all possible things to get into a festival/support a band/play wherever on the east coast! We would love to spread our djypsy fire beyond our gorgeous WA state (and the world yes)! Right now though we are going to focus on getting the rest of the tracks we have under our belt ready to be mixed and mastered, which means hours of comping… woop! We want to focus on songwriting, get our forever evolving live set to another level and possibly invest in an in-ear rack! We are also gearing up and booking the holy summer season!

What’s your scene?

You can find the Djypsies at a candlelit Jazz night, in the bush in front of a sound system listening to some fat dub, techno or psytrance, at a folk or circus festival, a heavy metal gig or a Cabaret… We love a bit of everything and are forever curious!
