Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
‘Johnny’ is a Ronettes-inspired ode to a flashy entertainer whose off-stage persona stole my heart. It’s the single from my EP ‘Four Love Songs By Tanzer’, each track of which addresses a different lover and a different dramatic predicament.
What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
My EP track ‘Sleep’ – it’s simple, weird, poignant and very fun to perform. And the mellotron on it is my favourite sound on the record.
What, or who, inspires you?
The perpetual creative dissatisfaction that flutters in my belly and gets me out of bed every day.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
There are hundreds, possibly thousands, but perhaps I wouldn’t love them as much if they’d come from my own brain. For now I’ll say Boy Child by Scott Walker, This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us by Sparks and Sognando La Tua Voce by Piero Piccioni.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
It’d be a crazy nougat – sweet and chewy and with lots of different bits floating in it. Definitely nuts.
What’s next for you?
My EP launch on May 28 at The Toff – a 9-act lineup of the coolest people I know singing, dancing, acting and driving you wild.
What’s your scene?
A giant bed with a million pillows, a cool breeze and delicious company.

Melbourne composer and chanteuse Tanzer has unveiled her latest single ‘Johnny’from the upcoming EP Four Love Songs By Tanzer, due for release May 16th.
To celebrate the EP release, Tanzer and her flawless band will take over the Toff in Town on May 28th, headlining a glittering multi-arts line up that is sure to amaze.
‘Johnny’ is an ode to a performer whose brash public persona is at odds with the real man behind the mask. Written and arranged by Tanzer, produced and arranged by Angus Leslie (Sex On Toast) and mixed by Jean-Paul Fung, ‘Johnny’ is a densely orchestrated epic with 1960s Phil Spector-inspired orchestral pop sensibilities.
Tanzer is a dark and dazzling enigma, spinning tales of desperate love affairs and fabulous heartbreak with a haughty glare and a swelling, thumping soundscape.
Equal parts dreamy, stark and seductive, Tanzer conjures 60s film soundtracks, new-wave divas and otherworldly exotica – but ultimately lives in a genre all her own.
