Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
Our new single ‘Spanish Fitzroy’ / ‘1234 Go!’ is being released on strictly limited edition lathe cut vinyl (by ace Kiwi manufacturer Peter King) as well as a digital lollipop version. Both songs are from our debut long player ‘Go Rebelle!’, which we released last year and is doing very nicely, thank you very much. We’re launching it at the Winnebago Lounge down in St Kilda, our spiritual home, on Sunday 19 June. And you can check out the awesome videos we made for the songs via our website: www.rebelles.com.au.
How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
The Rebelles are like those weird foods where you get layer after layer of different ingredients and flavours all working together. There’s so much going on that it shouldn’t work, in fact it should be a right disaster. But because so much love and care has been put into the creation the more you dig in the more you dig.
Which of your songs resonate most strongly and why?
Both songs on the single are super fun to play. ‘Spanish Fitzroy’ is already a real crowd favourite, with its wild ending that builds up and up and up until you can’t hardly take it no more. ‘1234 Go!’ is our 90 second nod to The Ramones. We’re not fit to tie their shoelaces but this is our small way of saying thanks for all the joy they’ve given us.
Tell us a quick, on the road, anecdote.
That time Dean Moriarty is in San Francisco listening to Bird is cool.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Songs that either break your heart into a million pieces or lift you up into heaven. Harmonies that make you wanna jump into the ocean and keep swimming until you fall over the horizon. Guitars that rumble, drums that clatter and bass lines that force you onto the dance floor without a care in the world.
Which song do you wish you wrote?
I Say a Little Prayer. Perfection.
What’s next for you?
The Rebelles love nothing more than surprising our audience and putting a smile on their pretty faces by doing the unexpected. So, we’ve got a few things on the go – keep an eye out for some fun live stuff later in the year and, if you’re lucky, a new release or two.
What’s your scene?
Fun gigs! Dancing gigs! Fun, dancing gigs with lots of fun! Oh, and digital lollipops …
About The Rebelles
The Rebelles are excited as hell to be releasing their double A side single 1-2-3-4 Go! / Spanish Fitzroy lifted off their 2015 debut album Go! Rebelle! – and to celebrate they are holding one of their infamous shindigs as they launch it at Winne- bago Lounge, upstairs of St Kilda RSL on Sunday 19th June.
The Rebelles are fifteen wondrous women servin’ up a wall of girl group greatness, backed up by a blistering 4-piece rock’n’roll band. With punk energy, harmonic panache and a bad-but-not-evil glint, they’ve developed a reputation as one band you simply have to see, a genuine Melbourne institution.
Beat Magazine described 1-2-3-4 Go! as “Ramones meets Go-Gos numerical elegance” and Spanish Fitz- roy as having “Shangri-Las spaghetti western beauty”.
For almost 9 years The Rebelles have been taking girl group classics from the ‘50s and ‘60s and blasting them into the twenty-first century with a live show that never fails to get audiences on their feet. They’ve sung murder ballads with Dan Sultan at the Reclink Community Cup, filled the Flinders St stage at the first Melbourne White Night and crooned Christmas carols with the Black Eyed Susans.
The Rebelles are unlike any other band on the circuit right now. First of all there’s the obvious fact that they have enough members to fill a basketball team making touring a hectic schedule of multiple spreadsheets just to keep track of all members. but that’s where the novelty band ends ; they will blow your hair back watching them live, and all the while they ooze that perennial cool, a bit like a good Tarantino film – whilst it’s a bit retro it is also very very timeless.
Don’t miss The Rebelles whip the crowd into a frenzy at Winnebago Lounge, upstairs at St Kilda RSL as they launch their double A side single 1-2-3-4 Go! / Spanish Fitzroy on Sunday 19th June. 2 sets from 5pm, drinks at RSL prices and free entry. You gotta love that!
“So sassy it buckles your bandy little knees in salivating admiration….This is one classy rock’n’roll band” (Patrick Emery, Beat Magazine)
