Q&A Scene: Rocco Bene

Tell us about your new single/ album/ tour?
I recorded this cover of Wendy Matthews’ song ‘The day you went away’ during a dark period in my life that would significantly impact and change it forever. My cover of ‘The Day You Went Away’ is dedicated to the ones you love and a celebration of life. This is dedicated to my beautiful mum who’s now an angel by my side.

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?
My latest cover of Wendy Matthews’ ‘The Day You Went Away’ would have to be it at the moment. I recorded it during one of the most tragic times of my life following another tragic event. I had recorded this track when my Mum was ill last year and while my family and I were in the room waiting for her to become an angel we were playing it to her. It is extremely special to me that I was able to record my own version of a song that I love and be able to play it to her and give her peace during her final moments.

How would you describe your sound in food form and why?
Cocoa Pops – cause it’s got the snap, crackle, pop with a tan

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.
Late last year I went on a trip down memory lane and watched a few old VHS videos that we had recorded on the national tour when I was in a boy band. There was one video where a certain Entertainment Reporter busted into our room and ate all our sandwiches and took off. He didn’t say much. Just snatched our food and left.

What, or who, inspires you?
Life inspires me. Each day I get inspired by a different person or experience. A lot of my life experiences are expressed in the tracks I write and it often hits me at the strangest times. The notes section of my smartphone comes in very handy.

Through my experiences I have been able to refine how I express the stories of my life. We all have a story to tell, its how you tell your story that matters.

Which song do you wish you wrote?
Stand by me

What’s next for you?
I’m off to Europe in September…watch this space for details….

What’s your scene?
Underground with a twist
