Q&A Scene: Jonathan Joseph ~ PROJECT MAMA EARTH

New Album: Project Mama Earth

What’s your favourite work at this point in time?

I am certainly very happy with this body of work. I have been studying the rhythms on this project for many years. I take great satisfaction in seeing the Project come to life!

Tell us a quick, on the road or studio, anecdote.

The song Waterfall was created on the 2nd day of our 10 day recording sessions. Jonathan Shorten, Etienne and myself, we were still in the process of developing our Studio dynamic in terms of creating the tracks. Nitin was not available when we started recording so we worked the first 5 days as a trio.

Once the track was created we sent it over to the kitchen where Joss would develop the melody and write the lyrics. When we took our dinner break, Joss mentioned that she wanted to write a song about Waterfalls. To be honest, I didn’t think that was a good subject to write about since the song was so intense. It starts of very soft and gracious but then it just becomes fierce. Joss told one of the guys that she wanted to prove to me that her idea about a waterfall was a good one. Well, she was right! She developed a melody that was as gentle as a brook yet as fierce as Niagara Falls!

What, or who, inspires you?

That’s a good question, I’m inspired by music that moves me. Haunting melodies that penetrate the human condition. The intro on the song What Would She Say. That melody and the chords, the sound of the electric guitar and Joss’s voice. I find that combination of sounds inspirational.

Which song do you wish you wrote?

I participated in writing all of the songs. As a matter of fact, we all participated in creating the music for the EP. That was agreed before we arrived in Devon. Come to think of it oh, I never heard a song that I wish that I had written. I’m the type of person who has great appreciation for those people who write inspirational music. I’ve never felt like I wished that I had done this or that piece of work myself.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on another musical project that brings Christians & Jews together. It’s called Uniquely United. We are combining long standing Jewish values and traditions with the power and soulfulness of the Gospel music experience. There’s nothing quite like this next project! I expect this will be very successful.

What’s your scene?

I like to looking forward so I’m brainstorming about a possible blues / rock collaboration. Creativity is the name of my scene!

Project Mama Earth’s debut EP Mama Earth is out now via Mascot Label Group / Stone’d Records

Project Mama Earth – Mama Earth.
All-star debut EP released 10 November on Stone’d/Mascot

Preparation is overrated. Impulse is everything. Such was the rebellious wisdom that drove the sessions for Project Mama Earth’s astonishing debut EP. In June 2017, five world-renowned musicians met in Devon England for a high-wire act unique in modern music.

They had no songs. No chord charts. No game plan. No safety net. Nothing, in fact, but a plan to play and catch the sparks.

We couldn’t be any more excited about a band than this all-star lineup of Joss Stone (vocals), Nitin Sawhney (guitar), Jonathan Joseph (drums), Étienne M’Bappé (bass/guitar) and Jonathan Shorten(keyboards). Project Mama Earth will release their debut EP “Mama Earth” on November 10, 2017 on Mascot/Provogue.

The 5 musicians convened at Stone’s house, where the musical squad didn’t take long to feel each other out. Music was spontaneously written on the spot, without any preparation. Just ten days after they came together, the Mama Earth sessions were over. And yet, you sense that the story of this fascinating band is only just beginning…

Project Mama Earth is available to from the Mascot Label Group store on CD, Vinyl and as a limited edition T-shirt bundle. Free poster, while stocks last! Click here to go to the Project Mama Earth store.
